• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Simple question ..... what is the coolest non Gibson guitar ?

Matt Hughes - Banker guitars.

Hand Made by one pair of hands - originally for Charlie Starr. One piece 3 century old Belize Mahogany sinker body, same wood for the neck hand carved using a 61 SG as a template, lovely soft V. Tyson tone pickups. Wonderful looking folded steel hardware. Handcut tortoise guard. Everywhere you look on this guitar, quality is staring you in the face.

And then you plug the bugger in.....

Never far away from my pair....sublime instrument.

And a small touch from the builder that had my bottom lip going a bit...

T'ain't no best - or coolest.
For a long time I've dug Jerry Garcia's Doug Irwins. The Abe Rivera guitars played by Kevin Eubanks on the Tonight Show were cool.
There's something classic about the big, carved top acoustics of old.
There's a simplicity to the Telecaster that makes it a classic, compared to the jet-age swoops of the Strat.
Rickenbackers have a distinct tonality of their own. Gretsches too...

My 60th birthday present. Started with a 40 year-old block of mahogany - I got to choose every detail, and watch it get built. Made by Mark Stoleson of Stol Guitars. The one before mine was a custom build for Les Dudek.

Strat might be the most popular or most common, but maybe not the "coolest"?

For example, there's a heck of a lot more Toyota Corollas on the road than Ferraris...

Very subjective, depending on what each person's definition of "cool" is I suppose.

For me personally, while the Strat is very familiar looking and sounding, I don't particularly love the middle pickup (gets in my way), the trem doesn't hold tune particularly well, and I don't like the control layout.

YMMV, yadda yadda

Maybe.

But the comparison between guitars and automobiles isn't very apt. A lot of people will buy a car they don't think is cool, because it's the best way for them to have transportation, something extremely necessary and practical, and coolness has absolutely nothing to do with it. Guitars are very much the exact opposite of that. Coolness is part of the core concept of a guitar, because they are not an economic necessity for 99+% of their owners. Conversely, at this point if Strats weren't thought of as cool, there are any number of equally cheap options, including bolt-neck LP copies.

I get it, you don't like Strats. They're not my favorite guitar either.

After that we'll agree to disagree.

Strats get that in between sound I don't get from anything else.

But, I'm always hitting that pickup switch when its on neck pos, I cant lean on the bridge without throwing the guitar out of tune, and why is that darn volume there? I'm always hitting it. Other than that... :)
