• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I have been told that for 2023 the 59 Greeny is coming and it will be Murphy Lab Aged. I am sure everyone knows this is the guitar owned by Peter Green, Gary Moore, and currently under the guardianship of Kirk Hammett. I am told by reliable sources there will be 2 versions and this will be a limited build allocated to dealers based on sales and territory however Gibson wont disclose how many they will build but will fill all dealer allocation orders available in 2023 only.

Version 1: Aged in the Murphy Lab and allocated to dealers. MSRP $14,999.

Version 2: Gibson Garage version only. Gibson will fly you to Nashville and you will get your guitar at the Gibson Garage with a meet & greet and photo op with Kirk Hammett and rumored that Kirk will sign your guitar. MSRP $49,999.

A dealer friend of mine joked that Garage version will come with a foot massage by Kirk! :giggle:
My opinion is that they will most likely be very awesome guitars yet they all ready reissued this model. As far as I can remember this seems to be a first for Gibson to reissue the same model twice.

Gibson has made place for, at least two, more names on the hardcase. Wonder how more correct and pricey they will be?

the big story here is A2 mags! I bet/hope that Gibson is going to drop the A3 magnets from the regular Custom Shop R Guitar Custombuckers

Curious if Brandon from Brandonwound created the pups for these models? He was brought in right before they created Kirk’s Greeny reissue.

my initial thoughts are

version one, for 15k better at least have a Brazilian fret board, resonate and sustain for days.

also at this price point it needs to pass the 10-guitar blindfold test, it cannot sound average

version two, play and sound wise needs to exceed version one

as far as signature goes, my personal view is that Dave Mustain is a much better musician and player than Kirk will ever be and for that reason I am out.

and if I'm brutally honestly, i think Robert Trujillo is better guitar player than Kirk ,

anyway if I was a collector with spare cash, version one for me. I can get a pic and sig later on

Yeah I dunno....

I went through a big deep dive into many of those guys years back. I remember my first time hearing of this "Mustaine" fella. I'm not a Metallica expert per se but maybe that's what the tape was. Now of course no offense but in the genre in general you got your tonal center which is almost always where they land on the 1 or it's where the guitar guy decides to put his fingers to the scale over said riff. Mustaine? Man I heard some tune and he was up on it! It was some metal ballad type thing and with each chord (if we can call it that, a diad??) old boy was hitting some changes. You realized pretty quickly he was not just a guitar dude but a proper bonafide cat. Good for him, it's refreshing to hear guys like that in the genre and there are others too like you noted.

But you're on a bit of jive IMO. I had the fortunate or unfortunate pleasure of teaching every inch of that Black album to kids all over northern Illinois for a few years. Every part of that thing written out time & time again, eventually I learned to use my old transcription then just walk over to the copy machine, lol. It was solid stuff for new learners, you take a couple of those tunes and put in the head of youngsters the idea of a diatonic, the said mode being used, how to make a little melody in it, how to do little speed trills and exercises in that pattern all based around some of those tunes. You know, add up 1+2 to get to 3. Really good music to start getting one's head around making rock music.

To imagine that a player like the Kirk fella isn't the perfect gel for that band is lacking taste. Should we also complain about the lack of Holdsworth in Bad Company, I mean WTF??? Boy I wish Mars Volta had a guitarist like Stevie Ray, it's a shame Roland Kirk wasn't Sinatra's tenor man and for the love of all that's holy why didn't Kafka write some books my two year old could read?

I always think these accurate reproductions are fun to see. I would like to see one, but if it were in a store, I wouldn't play it. My philosophy is that I never play a guitar in a shop unless I'm serious about buying that day. Making these available is a smart move from a marketing perspective and I'm sure there is limited demand and they will sell through.

I worked with Metallica and Kirk Hammet was a nice enough guy. I can't imagine him being rude to anyone or why people would want to insult him. He's sold millions of records, made millions of people happy, and has done what he wanted in life. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to do the same.

I can tell you boxes 3K and 3J contained some pretty amazing instruments! Everything is run through AxeFX and the cabinets by the drums are fake.

I think it is fair enough. Gibson see the price levels of CC1 on the used market (and of limited Kirk ESP guitars) and they see that some people are willing to pay such price levels. Why should they not benefit from it? And why should these people not have an offering from Gibson at that level which they seem to be looking for?
Gibson have products at all price points, we can chose based on what we can afford / are willing to pay.
I also think that they are right to position this new release higher than CC1’s price, considering it has a brazilian board (may not make it better at all… still more rare / accurate) and will probably be signed by Kirk (why not since owners will meet him when they pick up their guitat).
If they do not ”protect” used prices, they kill the collector market. It is a difficult balance and it seems to me that they are doing it right.
I can’t justify spending 50k on Greenie… not when I still have a mortgage to pay lol
Also it is not my favorite burst… haha
But I don’t have an issue with Gibson releasing it at this price point. If i were loaded i would probably buy it…

I've been a Peter Green fan since the late 60's. I saw the original FM right before Green left for good while in HS here in the States. It was an amazing show - as much as I can remember! Gonzaga University. Kennedy Pavilion 1970 or 71?

As a player it has always been a dream to have a Les Paul that replicated Green's sound and after buying my first Les Paul in the early 1990's, long story short, not knowing what I was doing made a couple of attempts to do so. This past spring I ended up buying a 50's Les Paul Standard from Wildwood with their special wound pickups. I flipped the magnet and can coax a pretty good Greeny sound out of it. I am convinced though, that I need un-potted pickups to get a more authentic sound. Listen to those live albums and those pickups just howl! A cranked up amp helps, too. Anyway, this guitar is good enough for me.

This new reissue is pretty cool but way out of my leaugue financially. Even if I could afford one I don't know if I would, but then again I'd probably be a totally different person if I had that kind of disposable scratch . :)
For me, the road travelled has been an adventure all the way and has made me a better guitar player, musician, given me a better ear plus has been loads of fun. You can't buy that with any amount of money.

Yes, and it's pretty clear that the JC/Cesar playbook includes capitalizing on the halo effect for aspirational, limited pieces which stir desire down the product line.

This is just the opening salvo with Kirk. May not be more Sorta-Greenies but... Look at the Jerry Cantrell and Adam Jones offerings. Make an initial splash, then trickle down from Custom to USA to Epiphone, and across to the acoustics. There may be no singular repeat of Slash, but they are going to line up as many notables to ride in the wake!

And kudos for keeping it nice about Kirk. He's the steward of a famous burst and also a fixture in a legendary band. The confluence of those two facts brings certain advantages, I don't blame them for leveraging... even if I don't rate the 'experience' portion of this release valuable. Many will, absolutely. I am happy for them.

Metallica rules.🤘🏽. man sometimes this forum is worse than TGP.. whiny boomers😂 this guitar was not marketed for us who can’t afford it.. plain and simple. I love Peter green and ofcourse gary moore but like it or not Kirk has inspired more people to pick up the guitar than green and moore combined.. 😂😎🤘🏽
