• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Sorry to respond to an old thread, but Martin Barre was an EXCELLENT Les Paul player back in the seventies. He sadly no longer owns any of his Les Pauls , having sold them all to George Gruhn and Gruhn Guitars in Nashville in the 2000s. He played the great guitar riff from Aqualung on a Les Paul, and I think War Child was also played on a Les Paul, using great Hiwatt and Marshall amps.

Fabulous tones and playing. I was a big fan of JT up until Aqualung. That one I got a bit tired of because the knuckleheads who lived across the hall from me in the dorm played it 24x7 for probably 6 months, relentlessly, lol. But I saw the 2nd version of the band (right when Barre joined), a couple times on their first US tour. They were absolutely fantastic!! Jethro Tull is one of the bands I always think of when I think about how creative the music scene was in the 60s and early 70s. Man...just wow!!!

Yeah, I liked his playing with Tull. I thought he used a Les Paul Junior on Aqualung?
He did, and he also owned a red Gibson SG that he gave to Ian Anderson (you can see Martin playing it in the inner sleeve photos of Living In The Past, and Ian posing with it in the inner sleeve of Live Bursting Out).

When making a list of unsung Rock and Roll guitar heroes, there are good arguments to put Martin Barre at the top.
I think he was overshadowed by the songs and uniqueness of the BAND...the SONGS.
This is a good thing for music but not for being a stand-out.
It's what Clapton and Greenie were trying so hard to accomplish.

Jethro Tull Live at the Capital Centre 1977......

I'm blown away by Jethro Tull's performance at the Capital Centre, Largo MD, ....just outside of Washington D.C., in 1977.
