• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Some Marshall advise Please....

I am playing small clubs lately and have been trying to bring my stage volume down some. On my last gig I took my 18 watt Marshall and hooked it up to a Vox open back cabinet with 2 blue G12s in it? It sounded great but I am thinking a closed back cabinet might would do the job better? It is also barely loud enough and won't be for some gigs. I need some cabinet and speaker suggestions on how to improve using my 18 watt? I have a 66 JTM45 that I dearly love for louder gigs but I also need to cover those gigs where the JTM45 is just too loud?:60burst

IMO, a closed back cab is a bit too directional in a low power situation. The cool thing about open backed cabs is the fact that they can really fill space when placed about a foot away from a wall.

The other guitar player in my band has a Mesa half back cab. The bottom half is closed and the slanted top is open. The thing sounds inf#ckingcredible! He runs a Plexi reissue through it. Sounds like God.:dude

I am glad you told me that Snags. I have not played through a closed back cabinet on a gig in years. It is hard to remember what it was like all this time later.

Dave, what speakers? I have never played through a mesa cabinet that i can remember?:60burst

Good Advise, Joe!!!! Get rid of the damn thing!!!
I have been playing through it a lot lately and love it. For some reason I am always changing my rig? Right now the 18 watt is the best for me. It is a great club amp. I am looking for ways to improve it live though. :60burst

I know the top 2 are Celestions. I dont remember what ones. The bottoms are either Celestions or EVs? The cab is from the late '80s. Its heavy as a bastard with that steel grill, but it has casters.
I want one myself!

Call me kooky, but I would stick a master in the JTM45 and be done with the volume problems once and for all.

If I can dig up a dual pot worthy of a '66 JTM45 in a couple weeks, I'm pretty sure we can fix your problem, 60Burst.

boogie half back

i had two of those cabs a few years back-i bought them from anthrax after the stomp 442 or something like that tour-cool bunch of dudes-i met them thru a guy who grew up with them in nyc and he had a large band rehersal studio-any ways mine had ev 150 watters in the bottom and celestion v 30s in the top-not my favorite cabs and the weighed a ton-small very focused tone with the back on-a little combo like breath when off-then i found the marshall god and sold them:lol

Ed & Rich, I was under the impression that the Rich mod would not work well on an old JTM45? Did I just make that up? My mind has a mind of its own, sometimes. The JTM45 is my amp of choice but it is just too loud for many gigs. I guess I should play better places?:60burst

It'll work- it's the exact same phase inverter that's in all the JTM/JCM heads. I told you it would work when we talked on the phone, but I also said it might not have the same effect, because the channel one volume becomes a preamp gaoin, and whne I back mine off too much it begins to sound dull. Alos, if you don't run that head with the channels jumped it won't sound the same.

let's give it a shot? I misunderstood. I do that. I am looking forward to your visit, Ed. I have lots of amps for you to hear and I am looking forward to hearing your Marshall through a REAL cabinet.:lolspin You will be impressed with the 18 watt. It has that same sound but at 18 watts.:60burst

I might have to resort to some prestidigitaion and put one in my pocket while I'm there, then.
I'm getting up for the troip too. IT's going to be fun to put PAFs in teh Deweyburst , and play a real burst through my head, and play the Deweyburst through that 18-watter.
NOCD! HURRY UP DAMMIT!

Yes Tone, We can rock to our hearts content. I live where noise is not a problem. Ed will get to hear and play through some of the best sounding amps on the planet, including the Voxes. He will surely be in the market to buy a new amp shortly after he goes home? I have some stuff that will knock his socks off. I know he likes Marshall and I have a few good ones but the Vox, Wem and Selmer stuff should be a new revelation to him? He has a good time in front of him......I am looking forward to it!!:60burst

Get the soldering iron heated up, go buy a bunch of solder, and let's record it if you have the facilities.
