• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

static crackles and pops?

Recently my LP is crackling and popping something fierce. I'm not talking about the little buzzing you can hear until you touch the strings but just random static electricity crackling. Happens at the moment you touch the strings or metal and it happens while playing, not taking hands off strings. It should be grounded to the tailpiece studs shouldn't it? Can that connection work itself loose? I plugged in my Dean EVO and it's dead quite. I have tried different amps and cables and no change.

Could be the annual dry winter static electricity. Try wiping plastic with a dryer sheet.

I too have had this annoying static in the Winters. I have tried the dryer sheets with short lived results. I would up trying static guard for ironing clothes. I sprayed a bit on my finger and rubbed it on my pickguard and plate covers, seems to work really well. It didn't hurt the finish of the plastic. It's the best thing I've tried so far..

You could have a loose solder joint maybe ? Or something came undone and is causing the dreadful snap crackle and pop. Might want a tech to examine it .

Had this problem with a 2001 LP Classic I bought barely used many years ago. It gradually disappeared as I played it.

12 °F and 15% relative humidity, you got static brother, and that starts with an s and
ends in a c and that spells trouble. Static sheets will work, some. Or wait until spring.

I run a humidifier in my finished basement at 50% and it helps a lot. On my newer LPs (16,19,21) I still get a little static every now and then because of the electrolysis process Gibson uses .
