• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Good afternoon. I play in a band. We own a small apartment where we store all our instruments. That apartment is on the first floor of a building and the windows are not protected It is easier to keep them there instead of bringing them to that place every time we meet. We started to think about our base security. Looking for any reliable reviews on the security systems we can install. I suppose we need a fire alarm, motion sensors, and cameras. It would be great to have an opportunity to remote control through the app. We will consider both DIY and professional options. But, the pro system is better. Our friend recommended Ajax. Does anyone use it? Please, share your experience.

Heavy artillery.
But honestly, |The first thing is to keep the blinds on those windows drawn, and any (or as much as practical) equipment out of sight.
Also, there are DIY security cameras available, that will work with an app on your phone, and will send an alert if there is any activity in the room.
Also, I would recommend bringing any expensive or sentimental instruments home after rehersal . That may not be an option with big amps, but a guitar in a case or gig bag isn't as big a deal.

Really? For Historics?

Or are there vintage pieces there as well? I've never seen a safe that large other than at the bank.

Must have been a challenge installing that. Cool.

It is quite easy to install.

You can do it in a completed closet at the top of a 20 story building with no elevator. Called a SnapSafe.

https://www.snapsafe.com/modular-safes/

Looks like they don't make them this deep anymore but if you talk to them it may still be an option. I personally am considering going another panel deeper so I could get 28 guitars in instead of the 18 which fit in this one.

And yes, there are vintage in there as well. But all these are LP and LP sized guitars to hit the 18 mark.

This one was around $2400 when I bought it. comes on a skid and the panels are around 30# apiece and the door comes in at 70-90 so it is a bit harder to move. You literally can build it into a closet. You have to get in it to bolt the panels together, then you pop in the fire insulation then the felt covered liner panels. Drop the door on it's hinges and you are done. About 2 hours to bolt together. Rods lock it through the door to the frame.

I lived at a spot right on the edge of the hood in Chicago for 4 or so years. At the time I didn't think about it but we had **** for security, not even deadbolts in the back. That place had probably been cased a number of times yet the ONE time we got burgled was when I had taken my dog (lab) out for the afternoon.

Don't underestimate the deterrent of a big dog, most operations are smash & grab, and the hassle the dog alarm will cause the guy to go to the next easiest spot. When my place was broken into they stole my squier parts strat, my laptop, projector and all my nicer guitars & studio equipment were left untouched!:wow

As much as it sucked I also felt lucky as hell, however, Mr. Doggo from then on only left home when others were staying in.

Usually the robbers want the quick flip of something that leaves little trace and when nice guitars are stolen I always wonder if an inside job was in the works. With all that said, I can't help you on remote security, I know of people getting gear trailers & storage units broken into with part time guards, alarms and cameras everywhere, so much so that I'd never use one of those "Bob's U-Store-It" spots. However, I've don't know anyone who had a professional rehearsal space that has had this happen, those spots are usually occupied 24/7. Leaving an apartment alone? That's a tough call.

Well, nowadays we are having an incredible amount of great security systems actually. Moreover, you could easily try and use some security cameras and connect them to the security system that you would like to have. You could even try a ring doorbell which is also a really great thing. In case you are still looking for a good security system you could try out the services of Hereford security company. I have called for their services when setting the security system for my house and office. They are really amazing, and their services are incredible actually.

Good afternoon. I play in a band. (...) Please, share your experience.

Been playing in a band for the last handful of years now. We play professionally although we don't need to live out of the band. At least we did, until the COVID shut us up till further notice...

Well, I'd say having a storage apartment is only necessary if you really live too far away from the venues you play at and the studios you rehearse at.

My own experience: our band plays mostly classic rock/blues and our own songs, which are within the boundaries of that same style. I own 3 guitars, pedals, amps and such but I rarely take 1/3 of my gear to gigs. Less is more in our style. So it's logically safer and more practical to keep the gear with me at home. To be honest, I rarely take more than 1 or 2 guitars on the road even when we tour. Everything I need as a guitarist fits in my car's trunk, everything else we just rent in situ previously. We don't travel with all the stage paraphernalia. All we demand is that everything is in place when we arrive for soundcheck and if there is a technical problem with the venue's equipment, it's their problem, not ours. That keeps everything simple and effective.

P.S. I live 90 miles away from where the band rehearses and gigs. I hit the road to every practice session.

around 81 i was young and poor and rented a small run down house in a small run down neighborhood. someone broke in while i was gone and grabbed some small jewelry off of nightstand next to my bed, i had a long dark closet and it was empty except i had my 52 esquire and 56 les paul custom leaned up in their cases in the back of the closet. they missed those! i was in shock that they were still there. years later kieth richards wound up with the esquire.

around 91 or 92 i was low on cash and had a mortgage etc and sent the esquire with a friend to the bay area, he listed it in the paper for 4k a collector showed up and gave 3900 for it. it played like butter i hated selling it, i had traded a 58 fender pro amp for it around 81. at the end of that summer i had sold the property i was working on and called the guy and told him i would buy it if he decided to sell it and he told me 'to late, i just sold it to kieth richards' it was 100 percent original, it had a scratch running horizontally on the fender logo. my brother swears kieth opened with it at a concert he went to but who knows, kieth probably has 400 teles so... i still remember the serial number. if i ever meet keith i,m going to hit him up to sell it! if keith does own it he will know right away which one partly because of how well the frets are worn in evenly all the way up the neck and its one of the best playing esquires ever! i used to a/b it with every tele that came along it was the best one. real big airy spanky crisp tone. the thing was live. it looked real good too. it took decades to find another one close to that one that i could afford

in the late seventies a handfull of us played at this beer party we left all of our gear in the guest house so we could do it again the next night, the next day the house owner called me and said all of the gear was stolen! my amp and guitar! and a couple other amps and guitars and some light PA stuff. all gone! the other guitar player and bass player got there before me. the bass player decided to walk up the road and look for clues. he found all the gear up the road stashed in the bushes! i never left any gear anywhere after that, even 5 nighters at clubs i would drag the old tweed amp out with me every night .i wound up with a used carvin combo and i would leave that in the club, sounded really good actually,

I have Arlo wireless cameras facing the two doors from of the building my studio is in. I also have two cameras from different angles facing the main door once you’re inside.

If I got an alert and saw someone there I guess I would then call the police and hope they got there before the person left.

I’m sure there are professional options that are better. I also don’t advertise, don’t have a sign and don’t have anything marking the building as a studio.
