there's no right answer to that one -
You also forgot to mention it has to look cool.
|I've got a couple of the thin ones with a sliding pad on them that |I like a lot - Levy's PM25, I think.
|Otherwise most of mine are the single-layer 2.5 or 3" leather.
Pretty much any maker also makes padded ones. poke aound on the online retailer websites to see what's out there, and maybe check out a HGS |(local guitar shop) to see what they have in stock. Try a few different ones to see what you like. |And remember you can always change them out - straps are relatively cheap.

Usually a wider strap is helpful for shoulder problems as it spreads the weight over a larger area. I’ve got a Levi’s 2 layer leather strap for my LP. They make a wide variety of great straps and they have prices to fit most budgets.

I have a 3" wide Levys strap that has some elastic stretch to it and padded. Sold as a bass strap. I don't know the name or model number or if it's still being made. Mine is 15 years old. Just the ticket for a 9 lb. LP.

Levy's Leathers is my most purchased and used brand.

- My most used 'go-to' for Les Pauls is the MSS80 2" leather. There are also similarly built 2.5 and 3 inch models of various numbers.

- And a Neoprene Padded PM48NP-2 or -3 strap if you need more boing-boing.

- And Grolsch gaskets as locks!

Yeah, I have the boing-boing one, but it's a tamed boing-boing.} The strap was expensive but totally worth it.
Maybe this pic will help.

I used to think that the included Gibson straps were garbage. Spent a pretty penny on various others, Levy, Martin, fender. Padded, unpadded. Now I'm of the opinion that the include Gibson strap is the best. Go figure.

Hi! Can anyone recommend a long strap that's good for a heavy ('59 repo) Les Paul? I'm seeing lots of leather straps that feel good but they're too short. I wonder what guys like Jimmy Page and Slash use for straps since they play heavy Les Pauls slung low.

I have the same woven strap that John Cordy uses in his You Tube videos. My 10 lb. LP doesn't feel so heavy anymore.

I've got Souldier on three three of my Gibsons. They're not padded (at least mine aren't, not sure if they make padded or not) but I find them quite comfortable. The webbing is seatbelt material - same stuff in your car's shoulder belt. I love 'em 'cause not only are the ends nice and thick and sturdy but the nylon allows you to slide your guitar neck up or down while playing without ripping your shirt all out of kilter.

They’re increasingly hard to find, but the Levy’s #1 Stretch Strap is the most comfortable I’ve ever used. They’re light, they breathe, they don’t saw a hole across your shoulder, and they stay comfortable through a long gig. If you’re going to do the ”Slash, play it on your kneecaps” look, buy the XL.
