• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Have been musing with the idea of getting one of these Marshall combos and putting a 12" in it, either that or just get the head.
The current cab is around 3" smaller all the way round compared to a 1974X box so ostensively could fit a 12" with a bit of work done on the baffle, like guys do with PRs, however the speaker placement is currently offset.

I’d get the head, I have the Jubilee and a Zilla 1x12 and couldn’t be happier.
I use it in a wet dry with a Victory RK50.

it could fit a 12"

I was just about to put in a 100w Jensen tornado, but the V-whatever that's in it does just fine, I can't think what I would replace it with.

I would put in a 50w minimum, the amp really cranks.

The little jubilee combo was my other consideration, but the 10" in the SV was the tipping point. ( And I got a deal on an open box)

I'm more than happy with the 10". I think if you don't care for it, you'd be better off buying a head, then you can use different cabs/speakers.

The 10" they put in there is highly lauded. I suspect you'd be quite happy with it and enjoy more breakup at less dBs will maintaining the bass. 10s have come a long way since we were kids.

If you need the soundpower of a 12", like you want to annoy your neighbors or play in rowdy bars, then get a bigger cabinet for it and let it breathe.

Thanks for your posts/comments fellas.
Also, it's such a raunchy amp I think I'd put a 12AY7 in V1 to tame it down a bit. A true junior version plexi if ever there was one!!

Is it voiced raunchy? Uhg, they did that to the origin too. IMO the 2061 had it figured out in terms of headroom before breaking up, looking to get back into something like that after having unloaded my big guns.

I say raunchy because I was standing in front and really up close to a 20C combo at the store and at relatively low volume (with my LP), it was squealing all over the place.........no demo room unfortunately :ROFLMAO:

I just got this amp and have been playing it for the past few days. With a R8 and the amp set as follows, I’m getting a VERY full sound out of the amp with the stock 10” speaker and it sounds just as big as my Fender ‘65 DRRI with a 12”. I find no need to swap out the speaker or connect to a 12” cab. The amp channels must be jumpered to get the best out of it. Roll back the volume and tone on the neck pickup, set it a little higher on the bridge pickup and then you can switch between clean and raunch between the two pickups.

Instinctively I would blurt out: go for the head version!

However - These days Marshall is matching speakers in combos and users are happy with the 10" combo. Just one dude's opinion: it seems the optimal path is grab the combo, keep the 10" for portability, and add a cabinet with a 12" when needed.

You preserve portability, save money for a flexible add-on.

Good luck!

I too would go for the head and probably use a 2x12, maybe a 1x12 for smaller rooms. Coming off a summer where 90% of my gigs were on outdoor stages, a larger cab just seems to feel better. At least with the head, you can choose whatever speaker combinations you want and maybe switch around for different venues. MHO

Has anyone tried a G10 Gold alnico in their 20C as yet??

Caught up with a vid about this on youtube the other day, and the alnico predictably sounds more rounded and full as it should.
