• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The "if you had a time machine" concert.

Man, Detroit was a great place for music growing up. I saw so many great shows at the Grande and Eastown. Caught the Stones and Cream at Olympia. Saw Return to Forever with DiMeola at the Masonic Temple. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Free and Hendrix at Cobo, Deep Purple at Ford Auditorium and many, many artists at Pine Knob and tons of tones at the Birmingham Teen Center--in fact that's where I saw Fleetwood Mac twice (once with Green and then less than a year later with Christine, when Kiln House came out).
Detroit was the best place for music growing up.

I’d like to revisit my first ever concert: Rush (AFTK tour) & UFO (Lights Out tour) circa 1977.
I saw/met them on that tour! To be honest, I don't remember who they played with? Could've been UFO, but I don't ever remember seeing Michael Schenker?

Rush had a wide variety of support acts on that tour. What city did you see them in? I have the Rush book that lists every concert, city, date and support acts.

Very cool! It was Syracuse, NY.

We met them at the one to the hotels (the name escapes me) after the show.

Nov 18, 1977 in Syracuse, NY at the Onondaga County War Memorial Auditorium with AC/DC and Crawler. $6.00 advanced, $7.00 day of show. 5,632 people was the paid attendance. The band grossed $34,454.

Cool, thanks dk!

Right, it was the Onondaga County War Memorial Auditorium. That's pretty much where all the concerts were in Central NY. Once in a while, the Utica Auditorium would have some decent concerts too. In fact, I saw RUSH there as well (met them and the road crew before the show at the hotel).

Although I heard of them at that time and remember the band, I don't remember seeing Crawler, but I do remember seeing AC/DC, just not at that show. Needless to type, they were loud and for some reason, I seem to remember Angus having false teeth, or maybe fake ones for show?

Typically, I (we) purchased my (our) ticket(s) before the show and of course, being that most of the shows at that time were "General Admission", I (we) was (were) in the front row, directly in front of Alex! Here are some pictures from the various shows that I (we) saw them in them over the years, particularly in the '70s.

Don't quote me, but I think the picture of Alex in the lower lefthand corner of the collage of Alex is from that show? They're definitely playing "Xanadu" there.

Thanks again and

If I had a time machine, there is a long list I'd love to go back and see! But the top of that list would be to see Ozzy in '82 (on whatever show was the last one) before the horrific plane crash. Rest In Peace Randall William Rhoads.

I was on a motorcycle trip in Switzerland riding through Montreux in the summer of 1972. Saw a poster for the Mahavishnu Orchestra playing that night at the casino. Who the hell is that? I wondered, and rode on.

In 1976, after hitchhiking across the states I found myself in San Francisco. I was getting ready to leave and saw posters for the Last Waltz, coming up in 3 weeks.......damn, that would upset my timetable. So I carried on with my plans and left town....

In 1977 I was living in Saarbrücken, Germany and saw some small handbills for a band named the Police, playing that weekend in some dive. I said to myself, why would I go see a band named the Police?

Those are just a few. On the other hand, I got to see a lot of great artists and bands throughout the late 60’s and 70’s at some awesome gigs. Can’t catch all of ‘em.

Genesis Lamb Lies Down as well, Original Pink Floyd DSOTM, Miles Davis would have been cool also. (Pretty much anyone at Massy Hall, what a venue!)

I saw Bowie 5 times but not the original Ziggy Stardust tour. That would be amazing. That’s my number one pick. Damn I miss that guy.

If I had a time machine, I would have gone to see the Heart and Bob Welch gigs at the California Jam 2 concert. I have the 2 record set of it on vinyl, and the performances of Love Alive and Little Queen from that album are a must listen.

As great as they all were, nothing compared to Crossroads Fest 2007. Even if it was 100 degrees out... E.C. with Derek Trucks on slide and everything else about it. Just an unreal day of unreal talent.
