The recently updated Stewmac Les Paul plan was taken from Big Jim's '59, the famed "Iowa Burst". it was drawn by Don MacRostie when Jim was in town a few months back. www.stewmac.com/item/0857

I've been doing something like this (as Ed and Dave mentioned) for about the last 2 years. My latest version says version 7 on it but is probably more like 14 ;) or 140! The worst thing about this stuff is that there are now of course earlier versions my stuff floating around and they are all inaccurate in some way minor or major. But the latest version is pretty on.

Why do they have to be EXACT replicas? I think minor variations would increase the pleasure of having one of these. Rmember how often some player would say something like "Well, a lot of these guitars weren't so great, but i got hold of one that was different (i.e. better)" Handamde means individual means unique means you got one of a kind! As long as it stays close enough to the original to look and sound good, what's the problem? For instance, why can't the dish be more pronounced?

Here's some info

Animal hyde glue strenght 10,000 psi

Modern glues 3800 psi

Thats why those stradvarii are resonante and modern glues take a good month to set properly in air.

A bridge humbucker with at least 8.5k wind with enamal coating on the wire.

A bone nut

I always thought the resonance of a Stradivarius was more attributed to the minerals they used in the lacquer than anything else. It was some sort of crushed up stone.
The glue thing is interesting though.

Pity we couldn't set something like this up with a couple of Les Paul's. I bet there would be a few red faces in here...:laugh2:

It was really due to the european maple they used as you can not get old growth maple anymore.
The finish was apart of it as well as it let the wood vibrate more easily.

Antonio made the mistake of using a 2 degree neck pitch which people seem to have amended to 3.5!!!!!!!!!!

Awsome link maybe I should post this on the vintage forum as once again as SCIENCE blows apart alchemy, superstitions, myths and other such unsubstantiated notions.

with actual objective testing rather the unsubstantiated rantings of a few self proclaimed burst experts the old wood myth is shown the crappola port here.

Heck if the completely acoustic tone of a Stradivarius can be acurately recreated then a 59 gibby through and amp is already happening with a nice reissue and a good set of PAFS

Sorry folks the earth isn't flat, there are no witches ins Salem and old wood lesters don't sound different from new wood lesters based on wood content.

So, is anybody currently building a super accurate 'Burst replica?
If so, how's it coming along?

I hope you guys don't mind if I revive an old thread. I've been researching a LP build and there is just sooooooo much good info in this thread that I have to say Thank You to all the contributors.

I was also wondering if there are any updated versions of the files presented in this thread. Unfourtunetly lot of the links are broken. Did anyone archive any of the files from this thread?

This will also be my first post here. So I should also say Hi and thanks for having me. I spend a lot of time at some of the other big forums so I recognize a few of the names I'm seeing here.

Doubt it this has been dead for years, shame!!!

They never got to the proper top carve, due to the fact the originals have a flatter top, too much hassle - my old account was P59 on here!

Now we have seen the original carving machine, a hand router is no were good enough, full stop!!

From many readings on this forum & aquaintances. The originals where not mythical Mahogany just all types of that type of tree.... Quoting Albert Lee I had a BB that was 15 pounds from Eric Clapton.
