• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The PU's in my SG Special are out of phase!

My '64 SG Spec. sounds thin and nasally in the middle position w/ both PU's on.
These pick-ups have not been removed since they were installed in Kalamazoo!
Is anyone willing to give me the step x step procedure?
Help!
Thanks,
Russ

If you're sure of what you are saying. Pull both pickups and look at the solder joints and see if one looks like it's been redone. And if so ....I use a jewler's file and steak knife to cut the solder. Flip the magnet....roll it over.....not end to end. Look for marks or mark it first. Or just flip one magnet in one pickup and that should do it. I also do not care for that sound. I use a 100watt iron to solder back and leave a few seconds to reset the wax. A small iron will not remove or install a pickup cover. You will be there for days. Good Luck and take your time on the pickup once the cover is off. remove the screws and gently loosen and move the bobbins and pull and roll the mag. Put back together the same way and install cover. Install pickups and measure with a ohm meter before and after. The middle reading should be half of the sum of the 2.

I'd assume it has P-90s. In that case you need to remove 1 p/u, pull the cover off (no soldering required), loosen the base and flip both of it's magnets.

Yes, it has P-90's.
So, there are 2 magnets in each PU, and they BOTH need to be flipped(turned upside down)?
Thanks!

Yes the magnets in a P90 oppose each other and they're tricky to get them to stay in the correct position on either side of the polepieces. It's possible that somebody removed the cover, the magnets flew off, and they didn't put them back on properly. Dan Erlewine's Guitar Player Repair Guide has some pictures of this situation.
