• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

the R9's are so passé .... now its all about the 58's ...

That's a good lot of pics stumphead....... (y)
In the old days(pre '13) at first glance the first three I would have picked as R9s and the pic as above, a R0(like the tomato finish on a late 1960).
In recent years however the boundaries have been breached in a good way with flametops at the less costly price point.........hence this thread.
I've got my plaintop '13 R8 which I won't part with because of its resonance and lighter weight.........an outstanding LP.

Good stuff stumphead. Agree with your notion of challenging the finishes, and in some ways you've gone full circle in showing that 58's and 59's certainly don't look more or less authentic because the range is far and wide on the originals, and even more vastly so on the reissues.

I have to say that Murphy Lab 58 posted on the first page, it had me hovering over the buy now for a good little while. That's the best I've seen ex Gibson "works". Fake dirt and wear and everything Al! And it sounds like your grump-pills have run out....go get some more.

We know flamey real '58's exist. I played a known flame one not that long ago and it really had all the stuff we love in spades...and it reminded me that 58 neck profiles can be very 59 like...shallow shoulders etc. So I am happy there are R8s and R9s that don't fit the stereo type....I get more options as a buyer.

But sheeiiiittt, I want that R8 on page 1!!!!

They all have some cool tops, some 59s look to BBQ some 58s look like a bad LP classic with a clown finish some 60s look to much like the tomato soup can, and have way over stated tops. the point is THEY ARE ALL COOL AND ALL DIFFERENT. the 58,59,60 are all similar enough to be lumped together and different enough for us to have to choose when buying. get what ever reissue year works for you. personally i just got a CME 1958 but it has a V2 60 neck profile and I LOVE IT. what year would that make mine ?????
Correct, there are plain tops in all 3 years. Usually comes down to your neck preference for the reissue. 58's have some wild tops now. I would call your guitar a 60.

Why are the recent 58's all coverless?
Don't think most of them are..............but showing some unpotted zebras(presumably) CBs is a good look I think.
