• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The Wood Thing Was Too Controversial

I posted a thread about how the wood of a guitar made really no difference in the sound of the guitar. That was too controversial. So I thought I would post something not controversial at all.
The thinner your strings are the better your guitar sounds and it sustains longer than thick strings. Of course there is a point of diminishing returns. It seems the thinner the strings are they vibrate longer. Because they are more flexible than thicker strings. The thicker strings get slowed down by the pull of the magnet. So they don’t sustain as long as thinner strings.

I like a single note to sustain for so long that the audience loses interest and leaves.

but the length of sustain really depends on the proper tonewood and pickguard material.

ohh and I only top wrap, but it’s harder to do on a strat.

I use old wood and RotoSound .08's and I would say the tone is that of "God's voice."

Steel guitars sustain longer than wood guitars. So it can’t be the wood. Must be the thickness of the strings.

Have you considered making pipe bombs in your basement and setting them at public parks and playgrounds?People generally have strong feelings and opinions about stuff like that, more so than they have about .9’s vs .10’s. Could really stir up some controversy.

I lucked out with my 58re. Certain notes create really sweet tones in the wood when played acoustically.
I've had real scientists prove this theory to be fact and not just fiction.
I'd like to think this translates in a nice way when plugged in.

Quality of sound is subjective, and I'd say, has more to do with the person playing knowing how to set the amp up.
Sustain is down to the physics of the wood and the parts attached to it, and almost nothing to do with the thickness of the strings.

For over 20 years I used 12s on a Stratocaster then later a Les Paul. Before and after those 12s I used 11s. Right now my hands are paying for those years. All I'm saying is be careful. Using heavy strings doesn't make your dick bigger than mine. It all comes down to your attack. The harder you play the heavier the strings.....but you'll pay later.

Right now I use 10s.
