• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

This should be an interesting test for the current market price of a '50s SC Special

I'll be watching this one out of pure curiosity.

I find it is pretty rare to see a true auction for one of these go down, as opposed to asking prices and buy-it-now type offerings.

My guess is it won't go anywhere close to what some people might think. But it should be interesting to see where it ends up...

It would be illegal to ship to Germany.
Are the laws different in the Netherlands? :hmm

The laws are different in the Netherlands but this is an EU law so neither Germany or the Netherlands have anything to say about it...

If it is Jim's Guitar, I have a foggy recollection of watching a "no reserve" auction they had for an ES-335 or ES-345 that had a very low final selling price . . . and then was back up on eBay for sale again the next week, with a higher starting bid. I suspected they bid at the end if they didn't like where the price was.

Not necessarily true, it just needs the right paperwork.

According to the German dealers and lawyers I have talked to, the only way it can get the paperwork is if you have proof it was in the EU before 1992. :ganz

You would think that a serial nr. or such pre -96 wouls be enough, but ...no dice
For all i care they can ban it completely in new builds, PRS ect

Didn't the US sign the CITES agreement? i guess so, since Gibson was busted.

That states that any 'commercial activity' with species listed on the A-list is forbidden if manufactured 1947-1992 without a certificate
After 1992 you can't get the certificate, those will be illegal anyway.

In Sweden you can get the certificate rather easy just by photographing the guitar and provide serial number info, proof of purchase
or anything that will place it as being made before 1992.

Or did i misunderstand all of this?

Wow, how times have changes. Less than 8k for a Special. I won't even tell you what I paid at the height in 2007 but ended up selling it to GC for 16k a year later.
