• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Thoughts on this Gibson SG 1969 Natural?

What are your thought on this SG?

I have had my eyes on this SG for a while, but are not sure on what to look out for in the 60s SGs;
it is in ok condition as far as I know besides from some dings and cracks which does not bother me since I just want a nice player grade guitar.

My thoughts center on the fact that the asking price is WAY too high for what that guitar is.

Do you Love the non beveled bodies? odd control cavity vibe and narrow nuts etc?

If so... then you need one of these.

If what you want is a killer SG for $2K get a recent reissue. Hands down.

This model didn’t appear until 1971, so the seller is off on the year.

This style of SG (with the Les Paul-ish pickguard and the controls on a plastic plate) is the least desirable period of SGs, with a reputation for being not just hideous, but of crappy quality.

Thats very interesting, good to know :)
and also what do you consider to be the golden period for SGs? they are probably way out of my paycheck, but it would be interesting to know

How recent of a reissue in that case? after 2018?

there are literally hundreds of 61 reissues on reverb. When I think of "awesome SG's" I think of the 61 reissue or the Custom.

The 61 or even the 62 reissue is pretty damn awesome in any year. 2020's are pretty tops.

But it really depends on what details matter most to you. 1 Piece body vs. 2? specific stock pickups? Deepest carves, curves and bevels?

The neck profiles are going to change and move a little but I've found most every 61 reissue that I've played to be pretty awesome in the feel and play department. The good thing is that there are a ton of options, the 61 reissue is pretty consistent and most are way under $2k.

Great I will look into the 2020 reissues :) when it comes to the details I think I want it as stock as possible if it is "newer", probably want a one with the deeper sculpting and the medium vibrola and maybe I will add more personal preferences regarding the pickups later on;
when it comes to the neck profile I will look after one with as small of a neck as possible, not used to playing on thicker necks. also nice if they cost under $2k, leaves way more room to be creative with new parts
thanks for the info (y)

You can easily add a Bigsby vibrato to a stop tail SG by using a Vibrate. Doesn't require any drilling and is completely reversible and you could keep it if you decided to sell the guitar.

Thats cool, would be nice to avoid drilling into the body... will look into that (y)
