• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I would have liked them better without the damn flute.

Toy was a fantastic player, but LOUD AS HELL.

My friends and I saw them when they were out promoting their first album. They played a free show on the soccer field at UC San Diego. Jimmy Buffet was the opening act and playing solo acoustic. He broke 3 or 4 strings in the first 3 songs. Things calmed down after someone came up from the crowd with a bong. The stage was really just a riser about a foot or so high and we were right in front. We all became MTB converts after that show and I saw the original lineup another 13 or 14 times before Tommy died and Toy left the band. That included a show at Winterland with The Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd as the opening acts. Some of the footage from that concert is in the Freebird movie.

Toy's thumb was something else and they could get pretty loud. One of the shows I saw was a New Year Eve gig at The Cow Palace. Toy had 3 Blackface Twins up on folding chairs and 3 more lined up right underneath. They were a really tight band and Tommy, George and Paul Riddle were an exceptional rhythm section. I certainly do miss them.

Imagine how good he'd be if somebody showed him how to pick properly!

Last time I saw Charlie Daniels he said the burst he was playing belong to Toy. He played "Take the Highway" as a tribute to Toy and his brother. He later went on to play Freebird and Jessica to pay tribute to LS and ABB. It was a great show and is available on CD as a live album.

HARD to find pics of his Burst, possibly because I just read that two of his vintage Lesters were stolen on the road in 1975. I think I found two and a nice 'extra'. Sorry they are so small...

This one was captioned as being from the "early days". Hard to tell regarding the maple peeking thru the cutaway and, does anyone know if any of his reissues had Klusons?

This is pretty cool from a club in Spartanburg, I believe, called The Ruins and looks Bursty to me...

Finally, just because its cool, one with the ES-350T that I saw him play This Ol Cowboy on once and fell in love with those guitars afterwards:

Looks like John Lee Hooker's hands, but Chuck Berry played a Humbucker guitar like that, but his had split inlays.
