• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I heard the pros and cons of 50's wiring and decided it was for me.. I thought it sounded great, but I neglected to thoroughly test it. I found a couple of months later if I had the neck pickup selected, the volume would decrease steadily from 10 to 2 but then go back up on 0; there was always a little signal coming through. With only the one pickup selected, if I rolled off the opposite volume control entirely, then the guitar turned off. Same with the bridge pickup, but both pickups together reacted normally. I double checked my wiring and it was OK. I used 500k pots, audio taper for volume, linear for tone. I rewired to modern style and things behaved correctly, but the tone is darker. What happened?

That's a head scratcher... What schematic did you use as a guide? Seems to me that if everything was wired correctly, there could be a bad pot. They're easy to damage if you heat the case too long when soldering.

Since you've gone back to modern wiring, have you checked the pots you used for '50s wiring with a meter? What do they read at '0', '1', '2', etc...
