I seem to be watching TV Westerns a lot instead of the news lately .I have questions for other fans. Would you rather haveThe Rifleman’s Winchester,or Steve McQeen’s sawed off rifle in Wanted Dead Or Alive?

I was thinking about the boy on Rifleman. He saw his father kill ex-friends and enemies every week! That can’t be healthy for a 10 or 12 year old. Every week for years! Do you think an acoustic guitar could have helped with ptsd? I know a farm is hard work, but a guitar could have kept the images of his dad killing every week at bay. What do you think?

I'd rather have Hoss Cartwright's fists with Matt Dillon as my backup. We're big western fans here, too.

The Rifleman's rifle.

The whole "Mare's Leg" is sooo stupid. Cut down so short, the tube magazine under the barrel would only hold a few rounds of the actual 44-40 cartridges. Even better, he carried 45-70 cartridges on his belt for looks!

I like how the “mares leg” isn’t in a holster but a kinda of platform. Jim,you set me straight. I didn’t think about less ammo. It would seem less accurate with short barrel. I am ignorant on Ernest T. Bass. The name sounds familiar, but a blank. Wagon Train is another good show. These shows were in the 50’s,and I was born in 61’

I`ve been watching them too. Always about someone screwing someone else
over women , water , cows , land , natives .
Some real pieces of work that wanted it ALL!

Never like the Rifleman, always sticking his nose into someone elses business.

The UK television channels have been showing a lot of US westerns lately, usually in the early afternoon. Some of them are good, some of them are definitely products of their age that do not translate into modern times..

Gunsmoke was the game changer. All previous westerns were same pattern. The half hour Gunsmokes were the best, hour ones too much blather.

How about Tales Of Wells Fargo or Cheyanne or Wild Wild West ? One a 1/2 hour ,the others 1 hour. Your right, 1/2 hour wraps it up quick, 1 hour gets some fast forwarding.

Nerd alert: Those were both Winchester Model 1892 variants. John Wayne's favorite was also the Model 1892. He owned several, though he preferred a standard saddle model carbine.

I am fortunate to have inherited my father's Model 1892 Sporting Model Rifle with the factory upgrade octagonal barrel, chambered in 38-40.

Because it appeared in so many western movies, the Model 1892 earned the comical sobriquet, "The Gun That Won the Western." This, despite the fact that having been debuted in the decade after the period of the Wild West it was an anachronism. I geeked out and studied the rifle's history and you can read what I learned, HERE. By the way, reproductions, some of them excellent, are being made again.

Oh yeah, but he was bellied up to the bar, cut down on the spray. 5 guys with him wore sealskin coats with fur collars, and Homburg hats. Money!
