For many years, my go-to Strat has been my 2008 AmStd, and my go-to Fender bass the last few years has been my AmPro P.
So I put together a JB, all AmPro parts--drilled and filled in side fret dots, and she's ready to go--Now, my favorite bass when playing compared to
my other basses. It's a psychological thing, I'm sure, but this bass is so much more fun to play than any of my other six basses.
The Strat has a story. In the 90s, I lived in Germany, and I made my closest friends there. My best friend and I played in a band together. He bought a 93 AmStd Strat from a friend who'd used oil in a terrible attempt at relic-ing. My bud took the neck off and put it on a different Strat body and played the thing to death, so there is real wear on it. When I left Germany, he wrote a dear message on the back of the headstock, and it'd been in my closet for almost two decades. Well, I pulled it out of the closet, sanded it down, coated the fretboard with poly, polished the frets, including a huge divot he'd put into it with wear. I put it on a new Player body in which I installed SD SSL-5s. The neck might still be an ugly thing, but I don't give a shit since it plays so well. My 2008 is wonderful, and I'll never get rid of it, but this "Clapmour Blekky" is my Strat of choice. It is a monster in playability and tone.
