• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I’d also appreciate any info on the capacitors. I’m guessing they’re not stock as very little was original when I bought the guitar in 84-85

IMG_0523.jpg

These are German-made ERO capacitors, which I've seen in older Marshalls and Hiwatts and maybe some Voxes. ERO caps are now manufactured by Vishay-Roederstein.

I don't know what type yours are, but currently Vishay-Roederstein makes them in Polyester, Polypropylene, and Metallized Polypropylene. Tube-Town sells the Polyester type.

BP - Great pics. More please.

Also would like to see the Ronson Custom back from the headstock doctor.

Talking of Ronson, at the Mick Ronson site, we are trying to get him on to the hall of fame via this site. All are welcome to vote for this superb guitarist via the world wide web.ipetitions.com/petition/Ronno/ site.

Cheers Merv, as soon as I get her back, the photo's will be up!

It'd be great if we could get Mick into the Hall of Fame, there's no-one I'd rather see inducted. Hopefully with all the current Mott hype there'll be a nice added interest boom!

Was messing around with my camera today so took another piccie of my 73 Les Paul

I’ve been letting it get some mild natural light over the past few months. Its also picking up some battle scars during rehearsals and the occasional gig.

Although it’s a 5 piece top some flame was hidden under the clownburst

LPfadedMar10.jpg

There’s a little checking beginning to start and I’m going to try to fade the back a bit as I’ve let the front fade as much as I would like it to. :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but thought some-one may find this interesting.

I decided to replace the old 300k pots and caps (500k post with .047caps and 50s wiring) and took a few photos of how it hadn’t faded under the pointers.

Also note how even the amber has faded lighter. It’s only been getting natural light through the bedroom window – not direct

Looks great! I've often wondered what the sun fading would do to a Desertburst?

These caps were made by the german company "Roederstein" in the late sixties.
Since 40 years, electronics and guitars are my hobby. I have seen a lot of these caps, and I still have a some of these in my inventory. Roederstein caps are the "Mercedes-Benz" of capacitors. "ERO-FOL" and ERO-FOL II" are lines of the Roederstein program. It seems to me that these caps are "ERO-FOL II"-types.

I am quite sure that these caps were stock when this guitar was made in 71 or 72. These caps were made in the 60s and were among the best caps you could get for the dollar.

You can see that the solder joints between the tone pots and the caps are untouched. Also untouched is the "output" of the volume pot at the middle lug of the volume pot (no "vintage wiring").

The pickups have been replaced (see the ugly looking new joint at the "input" of the volume pot.)

So I think that the electronics in the cavity are stock. The pickups have been desoldered or replaced at an unknown time.

Many thanks for that Fred – they are ERO-FOL II. I will probably put them back in at the weekend as the .047s below 5 sound mushy – I used Seymour Duncan’s diagrams.

Mercedes Benz is good enough for me :)

I read or was informed by someone that these contain PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls ) which were banned in the late 70s

The pickups I believe to be the original T-Tops but a previous owner had added a wire which looked like a coil tap. I believe you could wire this to one of the tone controls – there are no micro switch holes.

One of the original pots was from week 44, 1973, the others had no markings

So here's my question on this. I own a 2009 Traditional in ice tea burst and I always liked the faded treatment. I'd like to do this to it but some folks have told me the newer LP's have a fade resistent finish. Is that true? If so will the sun do antyhing to the finish?

Thanks,
Sam

Here's a pic of the guitar in question

Samdjr74, I rather like your guitar and don't see a need to change it. :)

Another nutter!
He who put fine wooden musical instrument in direct sunlight walk in darkness!
Isn't it obvious that putting any guitar out in direct sun every day for a week or two is not good fot it.
Don't you think a straight neck or one that remains atached to the body is more important than it's colour?
If not then piss off!

...not to be late to the party, but those are definitely stock capacitors. I've just come across three 74 les pauls, and all three have those caps in them.

Wow. Such venom

Another tact would be to ask if any precautions were taken to protect the neck. I would then have replied "yes and also to protect the headstock and inlays"

The recent fade has been purely down to natural light coming through my window protected by blinds.

I also worked in a music store for 13 years so am well aware of the effects of direct sunlight on guitars and monitored it constantly. The neck has never needed adjustment since 1985

Real nutters are currently burning and looting London

Many thanks though for reminding me why I don't post here so much nowadays

Ignore what people say! Most of time, this guys who bug you, they do that because they don´t have the guts you do!

I think your idea is great and shows the contrary of many here think: "you cannot fade modern LP´s...you will ruin the wood...you are an idi....blah blah blah"

The geetar is yours to do whatever you feel like!

Has anyone ever done this in a climate like California? Although, N. Umbria is similar I suppose. It was when I was there during July. But it's 97F degrees here. I'm just worried about real damage.
