• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I absolutely love the tone of this early V Front Superand, yes the late maple board Strat makes a hug difference.

Truthfully all those amps sound great, but I like the hollow and ragged tone of the middle one. Thanks for posting!

I enjoyed that video. One things occurs to me. I would like to hear all of the amps play through the same speakers so as to hear just the differences in the circuits. I have run too many different speakers on one amp to ignore that the whole game can change according to the speaker. IF all of those 12" Jensens are not smooth cones, the comparison is blurred, imho.
The V-Front really comes out, doesn't it?

To truly hear the difference I agree. I tried a Huge ceramic 12 inch speaker on an amp that was very midrange and bass sounding, brought out the treble and cleaner tones. Flat cone and ribbed truly are different given they are in similar condition. Also the condition and shape of each speaker cone makes a huge difference.

MapleFlame, hearing that V front made me plug in an old "A" Alamo cab I have that houses a smooth cone P15N that WEber VST did for me long ago. What a speaker! what efficiency....this little single EL-84Califone record player amp, which sounds good through anything so far, was huge. The cleans were magnificently rich and warm.....like that V-Front....everything was coming out front there. Light breakup was smoothly agressive. IT could get a little bit mushy in the low end when pushed hard....but the bass cut pot on my guitar helps cure that quickly. When pushed hard, the higher harmonics are unreal. I plugged that amp into a 12" Rola that I have been using with it...fresh recone on that too....done is 2002 but just now being used. things changed....not necessarily for the worse....but definitely different. Not as efficient by jsut a bit...not as warm in the cleans. The stiffness of the ribs shows through. THE light breakup was a bit edgier. When pushed hard, the low end was not as quick to lose the articulation.
IF I plug an EVI/Force into that little amp, it sits in between these two speakers...warmer than the Roland better able to hang together than the smooth cone 15".
Variables....I gotta have 'em.
thanks for posting that video...

I recently had the Jensen P10's in my '49 Super re-coned by Weber using smooth cones, paper voice coil, felt dust cover, and no dope. They sound wonderful. I think the smooth cones made a big difference over the ribbed cones that were put in a few years ago. Nicer cleans, and breakup occurs just a bit earlier.

The amp definitely favors Teles and Strats, IMHO.
