• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I see Les Paul volume volume/tone-control grounding plates for sale on Reverb, 500k pots and caps included, but they're more recent than the Standard 80 into which I want to install one replacing the original 300k/100k setup. But I notice the original's holes for the screws that hold the shielding "can" on are absent on the newer plates -- I assume, Gibson finally figured the screws weren't necessary.

That minor difference notwithstanding, does anyone know if the newer plates will fit the Standard 80's cavity and controls? Many thanks in advance for any info.

Don't worry about the grounding plate. Its only purpose is to simplify factory installation and it makes a single pot change a PITA. It has no impact on the sound whatsoever. You can either buy the pots with the grounding plate and install only the pots without the grounding plate if it doesn't fit, or simply buy four 500KA long thread potsand two capacitors and install them in your guitar.

I always liked the grounding plate and the can over top. Quiet. And you're right, a little easier to solder the lugs and the caps. Good tip.

So as long as the different years all fit okay ... cool.

Thanks for this.
