• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What are your favourite speakers for Marshall amps?

Very interesting as usual.

Are Those Gold similar to the Alnico Blues? (tonewise)

Somewhat but the Golds don't have the buzzy sound on top the blues have with an amp more gainy than an AC30. The blues would be my pick for the Vox but that open top tends to accentuate the fizz on top of a Marshall IMO. This is mainly the reissues, though. A friend has a 4x12 Marshal cab with original Blues and sounds great

I also recently acquired an old 8x10 basketweave cabinet and I have to say that I am loving this one too. IMO, those old 10 inch speaker are a great match for the JTM45 and was wondering if you had ever tried them...

I've bought three 8x10 basketweave cabs over the years but just snake bit when it comes to getting one with all eight good speakers. My same friend that has the old basketweave 4x12 loaded with vintage Celestion Blues has a basketweave 8x10 that is other worldly. I've tried to find one for myself but never can find one that all 8 speaker work. Those Celestion 10's are just not the same reconed, I tried.

If budget is an issue for anyone you can't go wrong with the Mojo British Series 25w or 30w speakers. When broken in I don't think anyone could tell the difference between original pre Rolas and the Mojotone British in a blindfold test. New under $100 each!

here's just a few of my old cabs and a pair of 8x10 checkerboards in one pic.

?? IIRC Celestion refused to sell the blues to Marshall due to the Vox connection. Which would mean that that cab is likely not original.

Thanks for the 'amp farm' pics - those always make my day.:jim

There's a 8X10 BW cab for sale here, but a few speakers are broken. So I won't be checking that out...my back certainly will appreciate that...

I never get tired of seeing that lineup of nice old Marshall gear! :salude By the way, here is a picture of mine with my 66 JTM45 on top. All the speakers are original with original cones. I think I may have one of those other worldly ones.... It sounds great the way it is, but I am having a strong matched pair of early 60's clear glass GEC KT66's put in the amp next week to replace the Shuguangs in it now. Looking forward to hearing the difference....

For new speakers I like the Scumbacks, especially the H series, either the 55 or 75 cones. The Scumnico's just about the most dead on reissue AlNiCo speaker I've ever heard... I don't know how they did that thing so right... it's downright scary sounding.

I use a single 65 watt H75 in an openback 1X12 cab with a 72 Super Lead and an Ultimate Attenuator. The tones out of that speaker are incredible.

... 2. Pre-Rola 25w - "THE" classic Marshall sound. (the one in your head)...

that pretty much nails it for me - but the later models (g12m25) aren´t bad either.
i used a quad of 72´s in a newer cab and plugging into it with a ´72 1987 and a strat, on came THE hendrix-tone (or any player of that era) - effortlessly.

cheers - 68.

I have read in Tonequest about Tone Tubby speakers- the rave is out there, but I don't know that I have heard one ever.
Has anyone tried these?
