What are your favourite speakers for Marshall amps?

Personally I like Heritage Greenbaks the best except for Jubes. They sound better with V30s IMO

What about you?

Cast frame Fanes in a Hiwatt 4x12 (early to mid 70's) are particularly agressive sounding with a nonmastervolume Marshall, then G12H30's (well broken in). I want to try the Heritage G12H30's and Scumback equivalent but haven't had the chance yet. Fanes really win hands down for me though.

Out of dozens, and dozens, (and probably more dozens) I've tried over the years, here's my "Top 5".

1. Pre-Rola G12H - 30w - *IF* you can find them, and with original cones, the search will be over forever and forever....

2. Pre-Rola 25w - "THE" classic Marshall sound. (the one in your head)

3. Celestion Gold - my favorite modern speaker with most tight/gainy amps. *Require break-in...brutally tight when new but once broken in they have more character of voice than any five modern speakers combined. Yes, they are a little expensive but you get what you pay for.

4. Celestion Heritage Series Greenback G12H - They did an amazing job on these "reissues". Also, well worth the money and a huge improvement over stock greenbacks.

5. Mojotone British Series 25w - Best bang for the buck with a vintage Marshall amp than any speaker I've heard. When fully broken in can sound IDENTICAL to the late 60's pre-Rola 25w G12M.

Very interesting as usual.

Are Those Gold similar to the Alnico Blues? (tonewise)

I certainly don't have the experience you do, but I think they sound amazing too. I now have a full stack of basketweave cabinets with these speakers in them. I definitely got lucky in acquiring these...

I was lucky enough to get a '68 angle top basketweave cabinet (from a music store in SC believe it or not off of e-bay), that had 3 original unmolested 30W Pre-Rola's in it. Exceptionally clean with metal handles and a back only retolex job and replacement logo. I paid a whopping $560! Less than 3 months later, I found a 30W Pre-Rola with the same cone code and dated the same month and year as my three and bought it for $240 to complete the set. How lucky was that?!?!?

The following year, I found a matched quad of Pre-Rola 30W speakers dated also to 1968 with the same original cones and bought them for $800 off of e-bay. They checked out fine and I was going to keep them as spares but found an empty 68 bottom cabinet that was exceptionally clean as well. I bought it for $1200 and voila' a complete stack of '68 basketweave cabinets with '68 unmolested Pre-Rola 30W speakers for the grand total of $2800.

I have a 73 PTP wired 50 Watt big box head that I have hooked up to this rig and it sounds amazing....

With all that said though, I also recently acquired an old 8x10 basketweave cabinet and I have to say that I am loving this one too. IMO, those old 10 inch speaker are a great match for the JTM45 and was wondering if you had ever tried them...

Lots of things I like...

G12M25 Pulsonic cone - probably my all-around favourite. I prefer these over G12H30 by a hair, but they're both great in slightly different ways. The ones I have are 55Hz cones and there's not a shrill frequency in sight.

G12H30 Pulsonic cone - same as above. Also 55Hz cones.

JBL D120 in an open back cab is a cool flavour, but can be a little grating over time. Very touch-sensitive and much more hi-fi than Celestion. Can be harsh, but respond really well to playing style, so you can actually offset that with the right technique.

Cerwin Vega ER123 - like a cross between Celestion and JBL. Really amazing speakers - clear and open-sounding like a JBL, but with a different (and to my ears more pleasant) upper mid spike, but tight bass and woody mids like a Celestion. When you push them, watch out for *incredible* harmonics and touch-sensitivity. I prefer these in a closed back cab.

Scumbacks are fantastic pre-Rola Celestion clones, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to replace my pre-Rolas with these if need be. I have a pair of alnico Scumnicos on the way in a Bluesbreaker cab, that will be interesting. And Jim Seavall is putting the finishing touches on clones of the early G12M20 and G12H25 paper voice coil/Kurt-Mueller "1777" lead cone speaker clones! That will be very interesting - the G12M20s are what you'd find in mid-66 pinstripe cabs like Clapton's "Fresh Cream" stack, and the G12H25 in the earliest "100" logo cabs like Jimi's first Marshall stack.

I like my pre-Chinese reissue Greenbacks!!

Same here! I've got a mid 70s Marshall 4x12 with the original G12H30 "Blackbacks" with the 55hZ bass response that are probably my favorites. But, I do indeed like the GB RIs (British and China made) a lot as well. The G12H30 RI is a great speakers as well. I've also got some "Creamback" G12Ms from the around 73 or so that are smokin as well! I like Celestions with just about any amp - Fenders, Matchless, Bad Cat, Divided By 13, insert cool amp here! My personal favorites.

All great pics here. #2 is a G12M, 25watt?

For new speakers I like the Scumbacks, especially the H series, either the 55 or 75 cones. The Scumnico's just about the most dead on reissue AlNiCo speaker I've ever heard... I don't know how they did that thing so right... it's downright scary sounding.

I have used JBL D 120s since 1974. In my best sounding cab, a 1971 angled cab, I have 4 factory 16 ohm speaks.

65 watt Scumback M75!!! I also really, really like the Eminence Private Jacks. The Heritage G12-65 isn't too far behind as are the reissue greenbacks.
