• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What do y'all make of this Norlin serial number.

The cutaway and tailpiece location says very late '70s/1980 or so. Many, many questions.

If the serial number is factory Gibson, it's a first for me. Possible back-of-headstock refin with new, weird serial?

"Made USA"?

Did the Japanese ever copy the pointy cutaway, or is it just the serial that's odd?

:hmm

Maple neck, Nashville Bridge and witchhat knobs say mid 70's. Number looks to be non factory. Someone did this, for who knows what.

The case has the same basic structure of a Univox case. The volute looks more like 1970-73 but the maple neck is a later era than that.

In the side angle picture of the headstock there appears to be a repaired break just below the 1st tuner. Do a headstock repair and refin the neck to cover that up. 75-77 had the sticker serial number so the luthier just imprinted some semblance of a serial number to identify for owner........if the first 2 digits of the replaced sticker serial number is "00" then it would have been a '76 model, if "06" then a '77 model, the imprinted number on here might be a 00 or 06 for the first 2 digits as the sticker would have shown. (There were supposed to be 8 digits on the sticker but maybe the luthier was lazy? He must have been since he left out the "in" in "Made in USA"). The other features/hardware also dates it to 76 or 77........................but now, I might be mistaken, hmm, hmm, hmm. The Norlin area of my brain has pretty much been destroyed.

...or is it "C8604A"?

BTW, on closer scrutiny, it may have been stamped "MADE IN USA". Whilst the 'I' of the 'IN' is clearly seen, the fourth string tuner appears to be covering the 'N'.

This is one strange beastie ......

It has obviously been dicked with. It is a 75-76 NASHVILLE made Custom that was either stolen or had a headstock repair. The oval decal is lost or was removed and the stamped number added. That is NOT a factory or original finish on the back of the headstock. I fail to see all the confusion about this.

The "marks" on the back of the headstock appear unoriginal, and therefore who knows what it is, or is not. :wah
