Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
Sparkletop, now you've got me intrigued--I wonder if Kt-66's can be used w/ the Studio 15? The schematics for that amp are in the back of Doyle's book if any amp guys here care to answer.
I didn't think those Orange Crush amps were vailable in the States yet. I wa stold by a distributor a month or less ago that it might be Christmas befire they show up here.
LHakim, I tried this from a recent article (9/01 p.138) in Vintage Guitar mag by amp guru Gerald Weber. He says 6L6, 5881, 7581A, EL37 or KT66 can be used in any 6V6 circuit. He did not mention the Studio 15 specifically. I did not re-bias the amp, just stuck them in (GE6L6) and did nothing else - no fireworks!
I recently got a Mesa-Boogie MKIV Short Chassis Combo(the head is rack mountable) in a Flamed Koa 1x12 Enclosure and I Love it.it has a 200 watt EV in it(NOT my favorite speaker).
Ed, the Crush is available now. A dealer in Somerville, MA , Rock City Guitars, carries the new line and he just sold a Crush that was on display when I was there recently but didn't have time to try out. He also had the 1x12, 2x12 combo, and a couple 4x12 cabs. I'm real curious about them.
REally? I've heard a 15R, and I really want one. I guess I'll have to call that store.
For some reason I'm getting into small amps these days. I dunno why- they don't make good endtables and i'm afraid to use them as plant stands
Ken, the AD-15-10 and AD-15-12 are tube amps that will run you about a grand each.
Orange was my amp of choice in the '70s. I'm sure that by the time of teh Arlington show, there will be a few in the States. I'll try one out then.
Kinda want to play around with a vintage 120, but I can live without them nowadays. Most of the 'vintage' Orange cabs you see around have Celestion speakers in them- mine had Thanes.
Yeah Ed. They had an AD15 model as well running about $800 and an AD30 2x12 for $1200 marked down a bit due to a ding in the grill cloth. I intend to try them out.
Let me know what you think when you get a chance to try one out.
My vote is for the 15watt 1x10 Fender Pro Junior. Nice clean sound up to about 4 and great overdriven raunch as you go up to 12 (it's two louder, innit?). Kind of loud for a bedroom amp but not too loud.
My home goof-off setup is a Peavey Transtubefex processor run stereo into a MosValve poweramp, pushing a pair of full-range speakers with an 8" driver and a tweeter each. I use the cabinet emulator for the magnetics, and full range with the piezos. The speakers are about 15' apart. It is obviously not the holy grail of tone, but it's damn versatile for dinking around along with cds and videos.
My little beater amp is a Peavey Classic 30. I didn't like the stock speaker, so I swapped it with a 65w Celestion which made a big difference. For what you can pick these up used, they offer a lot of bang for the buck. They are not very gig worthy, but for hacking around the house, they are fine. You can get some surprisingly good sounds from it. My favorite Peavey.
Dave, I have 3 recommendations...you may not believe it, but dont laugh until you try one:
1)Line 6 Spyder...no pedals needed, passable clean tone/chorus/delay/reverb and nice distortion tones as well. All in one package...inexpensive and perfect for noodling around the house.
2)Reverend Hellhound 40/60...I was able to get Vox and Fender clean tones out of this baby. Outrageous od/dist for a little 112 combo. Fender style reverb too.
3)Carr Hammerhead...a little more $$, but you will get JTM45 in a 112 combo.
This little baby kicks ass big time when cranked.
*or you could trade me one of your LP's for my Matchless Chieftain 112!
It is interesting to see the responses to this question, particularly from the guys using valve amps.
Many players who use valve amps will say that the enjoy the sound of the power section of their amp being driver hard. However, in a domestic environment it is often difficlut to drive even a 15 watt amp hard.
I think that those who want to use valves at home may wish to consider amps which are rated at around 5 watts. Although even this will be too loud at times ( a trumpet played with a bit of force outputs 5 watts- this is loud!). Also remember that the amp is usually rated at its RMS output not a peak.
Small amps worthy of consideration are the Orange AD5 (5 watts RMS) and the Cornford Harliquin (6 watts).
The Smicz Tads look an interesting product and I was wondering if anyone has tried them yet.
I love the Line6 Spider. You can really get a lot of different sounds out of it, it's very versital. Sounds really good at low / medium volumes. I've got the 2x10 combo.
