• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What to do with lower-mid-level guitars

that have been messed with to the point that they couldn't be brought back to stock -easily, or a typical guitar store wouldn't want to take them in because they probably wouldn't sell?

The majority are probably worth $500-$1000. I don't want to bother with EBay as the fees plus low return makes it not worth my time. Donating a few of them would be ok except there's no where around here who would want them.

Need to know because the basement has gotten crowded all of a sudden.:spabout

How about seeing if any local or close enough music schools or departments could use them. I know as a young guy I would play anything.

Music schools? Music departments? Young guys interested in playing guitar?

What are these things you speak of? :wah

Craigslist them.

Moms and dads will buy them for their kid real quick like. Instead of the PRS Double Dragon their kid wants .... well....they get one from you instead. A decent instrument at a fair price and mom and dad ain't gotta take out a second mortgage on the house or whatnot. :peace2

I was in a tough university music program in the 00's, every year the freshman jazz studies and classical studies group would have 10-20 people then by the end of first semester about half that...then about half that by second semester (if that) and the amount of people who never got past audition was usually a good bit larger. But, knowing a number of teachers/professors, I'd say enrollment hasn't been an issue just about anywhere in the US, even more so with the bigger private schools where gaining entry is much easier (Berklee, GIT, etc). In fact, in terms of existing programs, the only news I ever hear is of places like community colleges adding programs while I can't recall any one place cutting a guitar department. Add to that, it seem sales of "entry level" instruments have been pretty robust the past few years.

So, I don't know where this notion of kids not being interested comes from but it's not reflected on a large scale that I can see.

To the OP, I'd figure if you posted them at killer prices on the local CL's people would certainly make the drive. I've driven at least 5 hours one way for a good deal before! My last craigslist deal I went from Nashville to Knoxville for an amp, no regrets.

Give them away to relatives' kids or to fellow musicians who can't afford instruments. I'm half hippie, ya know.

btw mid-level instruments can be real workhorse players if you are a musician, not just a collector....

The eBay fee for musical instruments is 3.5% and paypal is 3% - in total that's lower than many state sales tax.

I sold a few lower priced guitars in various states of mod (and one Melody Maker husk) last winter and got what I asked for within 3 days of listing on eBay.
