• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What was the 1st fret thickness and neck width on 1961 and 62 SG's ?

I never knew what the 1st fret thickness was on my old SG, but a friend had several and some had a wider neck.

From the first SGs in 60/61 to early 1965 they were 1 11/16" wide at the nut.

The thicknesses were all over the place, (from pencil necks to boat necks) since they were hand shaped.

61s and 62s were generally on the thinner side, but not always...

I have a 62 Junior - not sure if mine is a happy accident, but the neck carve feels very similar to a 59 LP. Not thin at all - actually the best neck I've ever played (OK, I'm definitely biased... but it's perfect!).

Not sure exactly but my buddy's '61 has the thinnest neck I have ever played on a Gibson. It was thin all the way up... felt like if you looked at it wrong it would snap!

My '61 Standard has a pencil neck, measuring .787" at the 1st fret and .883" at the 12th. The nut is 1.689" wide, so pretty much 1-11/16" on the nose.

'61 Jr: 0.806/0.862, 1.69 nut
'61 Special: 0.787/0.908, 1.72 nut (can you say 'wide and flat'?)

(Just for fun: 1999 '61 RI (for which I just ordered some parts from Dan): 0.787/0.886, so they got at least that right..)
