• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What's your craziest or plain dumbest Historic story ?

OK I will start ......

So I buy a 2013 58 reissue from guitar center and get a killer price brand new - I think like 3200

Take the guitar home and it sounds KILLER .... best one I ever had.

looks real good too ,,,,,, flat swan with with mineral flecks

So what do I do ? ..... I return it .... for no good reason

Immediately regret the decision and ask the store if I could buy it back ..... they agree.- they even comment on how cheap I am getting it for.

A week later " Jesus Christ - why did I rebuy this thing - I am going to take this SOB back "

this time I take it back to a different guitar center

I then buy a goldtop historic 57 on ebay - great price - super light

I plug it in to my amp and I get a sick feeling " it does not sound near as good as the 58 "

I rush back to the second guitar center to rebuy the 58 for the third time - salesmen tells me it just sold 20 minutes earlier .....

Sounds like you are/are-not on your meds.
I sold the BBQ Pre historic (89 IIRC) on the right of my avatar. Someone on here said BBQ was bad so I HAD to sell it. Lightweight screamer and moaner- someone had put 57 classic's in it (Also bad by certain internet expert standards).
I would buy it back in two seconds.

I bought a slightly used 2013 58 reissue from guitar center..it had been twice returned at another store..they suspected the original buyer of parts swapping..or using it for gigs then returning it repeatedly...i recall the salesman speculating that the previous buyer was a doctor and possibly self medicating...lol..*wink

I have a cousin that could play a few songs, mostly acoustic strumming, nothing more. Huge Led Zeppelin fan. In 2000 he went to see Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes in Chicago, and was so blown away and inspired, the next day he went into Chicago Music Exchange and bought a brand new 2000 R9. Took it home, strummed it a few times, put it in the closet, and there it sat for several years.

In 2006 I joined the Marines. When I was home on leave after graduating boot camp, he gave it to me as a congratulations present. I was thrilled, but left it at my parents house for the four years I was in. It wasn't until I got out and then settled into an apartment in 2012 that I finally got the guitar and began making up for lost time. Stunning guitar that spent more than a decade locked up in case, with the same set of strings lit left the factory with.

I should have bought Aged/Signed Nielsen #10 when it was on Reverb.

Otherwise, I've never done anything crazy or dumb in my life.

Back in 2003 I bought a sweet R0. Took it home. A few days later the store got another one in with a top I liked better. Did the exchange.

Turns out the first one was a Brazilian sn#. The replacement was not.

Oh well…

Not a Historic , but a wonderful Les Paul Reissue from around 1985. Changed my amp from Marshall to high gain Engl Straight amp and Les Paul´s pickups produced lot of feebacks. So I swapped the Original pickups for Bartolini pickups. The great tone/ sound was gone. Later I swapped the guitar for a Neal Schon Signature Reverse Custom. Today I could cry cause of letting her go. What a fine guitar it was.....

Not a particularly crazy story, but about 6 years ago I went to the Ohio Winter Guitar Show. A nearby car accident had taken a power pole so the hall had no electricity (nor did the building have windows), so everyone had to walk around using their cellphone flashlights to see anything.

I came a across a 2007 Chambered CR8 that I really liked, but I decided to pass just because I had too many guitars already. A week later I couldn't get the guitar out of my head so I called the show organizer to ask for the name of the person that had reserved that table. I got the name, called the owner of the guitar, and made arrangements to take another look at it. His job was driving a Snap-On truck around to auto repair shops in the Ohio area so I met him at the truck in a nearby town. It was the first time and I imagine the last time I ever bought a Les Paul off of a Snap-On tool truck.

This Les Paul looked and sounded great and I enjoyed for several years, but then I was in one of my "I have too many guitars" moods, so I ended up selling it.

Looking at this photo makes me wish I had it back. LOL

Looks like a keeper to me! What did you have that made this seem redundant?

I owned one of the four left handed Gary Rossington Signature Les Pauls. It was a great guitar, and it got sold after I completed my Historic goldtop makeover project. Rare guitar, sold why? Stupid!

I guess it's crazy that I didn't pick up one of the 2018 Brazilian R9's that Dave's Guitar had in stock (for quite a while). Still bitterly regret that one.

My crazydumb story is probably similar to many. About 20 years ago I was in a Sam Ash and pulled down a black 58R. They had done a special run of that model. And I've always loved black LPs (years ago you'd see a number of them on stage). So I run it through a Vox and fall completely in love with it. I can't stop playing it. But -- two thousand bucks! How do I dare spend that?
So I drive home, which is an hour away.
And I'm thinking how damned fine that guitar was.
I think I was standing in the kitchen for about ten minutes before I realize that I needed that guitar. So I jump back in the car and drive back.
And in just that time it had sold.
Maybe some slob in the store heard me playing it? And yet, he STILL bought it!

Bought my 2021 R9 from the Gibson Garage back in January of this year. As a purchase perk got to visit the Artists’ Lounge hidden in the back of the GG (where artists in town for shows can hang out, have some drinks, and even take a shower if they want). While back there they let me into the Gibson Vault where I got to see some genuine old vintage Gibsons including a 59 LP (SN 9 0871), a 58 LPC w/ a Bigsby, 58 Flying V, a 57 Gold Top, etc, etc. They even had Keef’s Boogie amp back there... the one he recorded Start Me Up on. What a trip!

The 59!

And lastly, me holding my brand new R9 up to the real 59!

Have a 2013 R8 that was displayed on a wall of my loft for years. One of my crazy exes threw a rectangular glass drink coaster at me like a throwing star... I ducked and it stuck right into that R8. Bottom right. Doesn't look so bad from a distance but up close it's obviously a pretty deep wound, 1/3" or so.
