• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What's your take on PUs? Potted or unpotted

I think the tonal difference is very small. But you feel it more on the attack. Unpotted feels more connected to the playing.
For my use with my fire breathing high gain Marshall 2555X's I need wax potted pickups . No exceptions . I have also found with the level of volume I use that I am really not losing any highs to my ears . Plus the ThroBak 101 + pickups I use with my Les Paul's and Marshall's it's a perfect marriage and delivers a real mid range beast of tone and is perfect for my needs . With un potted pickups for myself it is too much of a battle with feedback ,along with the thinner tone . This works for me and is a personal choice .
Both kinda right from what I have seen and IMO.

You really get into "where to stand" when you hook up to 30 watts plus with unpotted.

But pretty much by that time most of the beatiful "ear nuance" is out the window.

It gives me great feelings of awe for our guitar heros of yore who could tame that dragon...

Great wisdom and insight and oh so true of your remark "where to stand " with un potted pickups . For me it's a fine line of nuance between time and energy spent on trying to get something to work and becomes a chore that I can do without . Time is precious and when I get into something that is a chore and tedious I lose the happy feeling I get from playing . Which is exactly what it is about for me , as if It wasn't fun why bother ? Your last remark is dead on accurate , as in awe and wonder of how are guitar heroes ( Clapton , Page , Beck , B.B. ) had to figure this out on the fly . Then factor in composing and recording . For us the path has been so much easier with the technology and equipment we have today versus when we were kids growing up and have our minds blowing by the likes of Cream , and Jimi , The Stones , and the Mighty Zeppelin . When I was a kid it first was trying to learn how to play a certain song or lick , which was hard enough . Then to try to get it to sound similar to the recording was like something from another planet . So much trial and error ( plenty of error ) and that goes for gear as well as this was way before the internet came along and you can You Tube anything .
