I recall trying a few Goldtops in 2003 and there was a particular one which I believe was a 1956 reissue with P90s . It had an absolutory massive neck which was shaped like a " U " and as big around as the head of a Louisville Slugger.

I dont recall seeing necks like that ever again

Was wondering if 2003 might have been the apex of neck size for Gibson ?

( the thread title is extremely funny ,,,, aint it ? )

The biggest historic necks I've played /owner (in order) are:
- 2021 Korina Flying V (not too far off the biggest neck I've ever held, which was a vintage Banner Gibson acoustic.)
- 2000 R9

thats interesting because I just had a 2014 Goldtop which I bought and quickly sold
it was a 1957 model and had a nice size neck but absolutely no where near the baseball bat " U" necks we are talking about here

I guess when it came to the goltop P90 models the designers at Gibson decided to go massive - these necks were so big I would bet you could get by with no truss rod at all

wonder what THAT does for the tone ?

Got a '13 R6 that's .973 at the first and 1.05 12th C shape and that's not big at all......feels great. It was really hard to find.
Arriving in the near future will be a 1" 1st and 1.05 12th M2M so will see how that feels as have asked for straight shoulders with that one so should be more D shape.
To me a baseball bat neck would be say 1.5" or so at the 1st and U shape like a vintage '52 GT I once tried.

Like the sound of those M2M dimensions Steve.

Is arrival imminent?

that's what I am talking about ..... a good 1 1/2 " at the first fret with massive straight side walls ...... " U "

I guarantee that most folks on this forum would literally start laughing if they picked up the 2003 R6 I am referring to

ironically the Gibson Banner was mentioned as the largest of any and all necks ,,,,,, well the other day at guitar center I tried a Banner reissue which had the nicest "V" neck I have ever played and a real Adirondack sound board .... not the dopey Sitka spruce - it was a CANNON !

My three M2M's, I was told, were the biggest to come out of the Custom Shop.
18 CS-336 P90 M2M -1st Fret depth - 1.031"
18 R7 Goldtop M2M - 1st Fret Depth - 1.023'
20 60th Aniv R0 M2M - 1st Fret Depth - 1.018"
All three have massive shoulders. Truss Rod channels had to be specially cut to make sure they were deep enough.
In fact, Gibson Custom scanned (see picture) of my CS-336 neck, to be used as the blueprint for the "Monster Neck" run that Tommy did for the Music Zoo a few months back.
Another forum member here has a '58 ES-335 on order through The Music Zoo, with my neck specs. This neck is referred to as the Babe neck, suggesting its like a baseball bat that Ruth himself would like!!

Steve, you know I love those big necks....MY 336 is HUGE....but I think a 1.5" 1st, with big shoulders would approach the unplayable....that almost-1/2" may not even be possible. As it was they barely took any meat off the back of my necks. There may not be enough wood on a normal blank to make it 1.5".....a question I will pose and get an answer on!!!

Yes Dave, I've not had enough experience with really fat necks to judge what's what so took a stab at it from the 3 fatties I own
Once mine arrives and knowing the theory and the practical workmanship behind The Babe I'll be all the wiser.........and as they say, I can't wait to get it!!
Keep rockin' bro.

Just to underscore Ren's input:

My 2003 R4 Stinger has a HUGE bat with big shoulders, by far the biggest thing I have (other than my mid-60s vintage SG Jr). ... Sorry, no measurements.
