• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Which new pots most like a vintage centralab?

soldering to them is well nigh impossible except to the sides

To that end... this technique helped me out quite a bit :salude

Look to the previous post, I think we posted around the same time. Yes, Grey Tigers.

Assembled and installed a PEC featured harness today... love the torque and roll-off of these pots and were it not for the hefty price tag these would probably be my favorites and receive my vote for 'most like vintage centralabs'. Imma stick with VI Pots for the time being, except in a few special ladies... :salude

The old quote "Similar minds must mean both of the yoyo's were dropped on their heads by their mothers" is in play here. Months ago before I bought the VIPots I was buying these PEC pots. I also had a new milling machine I bought and was in the process of creating what I called "The Conbobulator©™℗". A copper 'shark fin' that bridged the top of the PEC pot that you would just pass the braided wire through and touch it with solder instead of trying to wire to the pot top. I soon discovered how impossible that top was to solder to period. I started making them so they would attach to both sides. After they jerked the price so high on those pots I said the heck with it. Between the fin and the pot it would be more than it was worth.

Just installed a set of VIPots in a Les Paul. Wasn’t expecting that dramatic of a change in sweep compared to my Creamtone harnesses. Fantastic sweep!

I have a contact in Toronto who is an engineer at Pratt & Whitney and they buy their pots direct from Precision Electronics (also in Toronto)... I was going to have them build some pots to my specs (basically George Alessandro's specs but 550k instead of 500k) and was wondering if anyone else might be interested in getting some as well... if there is enough interest I might be able to set something up, I have no idea what the cost will be, probably in the $25-$35 range... :hmm

My brother hipped me to this stuff for soldering onto SS.

Thanks for the info. I got some from Amazon sitting on my shelf now! Just make real sure you use a Q-tip to wash it off (water) and do it SEVERAL times. It WILL continue to eat metal if not washed! I AM concerned on the PEC pots still that if it gets under the edge on the top you may induce problems though. I will dab it on VERY sparingly.

And the warning also covers all flux. You really should cleanse the areas after soldering. It won't eat a hole or anything (unless you go WAY overboard) but it will etch the surface a lot before evaporating enough it stops. The rule in the shop is parts need to be washed at the end of the day.

Let me think on this one. If I can get them cheaper than $25 I may be in. I love the PEC's quality for sure. But I love the VIP's more at the price they are. I stopped buying PEC's when they got greedy. I have a bunch of LONG SHAFT PEC's I am going to sell.

Thanks for the tip Dave P. The torque on the PEC pots is wonderful but soldering them in has been a nightmare.

I have black as well. I think if you mix them it's the best. It turns the flab into more of a cartilage sound unless you reverse the leads. Then it is more muscley. I have not tried the blue though. I may have to get a 3 pickup guitar to do that...

I just put a set of VIP pots, PIO caps and Seth Lovers in my 2014 Traditional. I really like the feel and taper of these pots.

Could you put these in a PRS? I have a DGT (the only PRS I was ever interested in) and was wondering if they would work for the two volume pots?
