• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Who makes a T-Top replica?

Yup thats why i did it. Kim Simmonds used one on the early Savoy Brown albums too, i think. And i like his tone. And of course Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash. Although i think he put pafs in his as soon as he got it.

andrew...ttops have the five or the two?

T-Tops have short AlNiCo 5 magnet. It's about .125" instead of .150". The 490R/T instead have A2. As said before, they are identical except for the mag and wax potting (not big problems though) :)

Find a broken T top for cheap and have it re-wound by Fralin.

Just my 2 cents. :peace2

You can get a good Angus AC/DC sound with that pickup but it does sound different than a T-Top. I would describe the Riff Raff as a cross between a 57 classic and a T-Top....
Ah right, thanks Swampsnake. I guess it's a matter of the Bareknuckles going for a sound rather than just cloning a T-Top then.

Exactly. It gets you there for the AC/DC sound and it is edgier and brighter than both the t-top and 57 classic but it tends to have characteristics of a blend of both of those pickups if that makes any sense.

Swampsnake, im dying to ask. Did you name yourself after the Sensational Alex Harvey Band song?

Yes I did. Vamborools! Zal Cleminson was another great SG player as is Angus. Good to hear that somebody else has heard of SAHB. You must be from NorthEast Ohio or the UK.

Agreed on the k readings... I've never seen a T-Top with my own eyes that rated more than 8.1k.
I have a 69 ES335 with T-Tops at 8.2. They have stickers and have never been opened. Ive owned the guitar since 1973

Fralin does great work, but Tom Brantley does equally great work for a better price. I agree that finding and repairing a busted T-Top is a service to the world.

I would just spend a couple of extra hundred dollars and buy an original one and throw it in the bridge.

I don’t see how buying a damaged T Top and having it rewound will be any cheaper.

T-Tops used A-2 & A-5’s and some of the magnets are weak and some are strong (over-charged).. I have 6 or 7 stickered T-Tops in one of my drawers out in my shop. I’ve had them in some of my guitars. They all sound good. I like putting Throbak A-4 magnets in them as it makes them sound more like a Pat.#(later PAF’s).
