• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Why New Bands Don't Play Gibson Guitars

El Gringo, I’m afraid of heights. Used to live in CT and had occasional trips out that way and crossed the Tappan Zee with nerves totally frazzled brrrrr. What a bridge though. A marvel.
It feels like an ocean going over it , that is when the traffic is flowing versus bumper to bumper gridlock .

Some may have to do with the popularity of amp/cab modeling with younger players (I know, I know....tube amps are the best. It's been said plenty). If you can plug in a sub$1000 guitar and have it sound pretty much exactly like a $4000 plus guitar, do younger players really want or need to spend a couple thousand extra dollars? The average concert goer likely can't tell the difference between real amps or a modeler, and smaller necks on other brands are probably just more comfortable and easier for the younger crowd to play live.
It's all about the tone and that is a most personal choice .

If your love for guitar is great - somebody will give you a Gibson. I always feel lucky in life, but when I was 16 I got a repaired headstock 1984 Explorer from my neighbor from just asking him about Gibson's. Later in life I was gifted a 2014 R8, again out of the sheer love of Gibson guitars. Again, I realize that's lucky - but guitars are my life and as such, it hasn't been overly difficult to own or acquire a Gibson. Even nowadays there seems to be a flooded used market. Make some moves and get to know people, make connections, make offers, something will happen.

Scour craisglist and ebay. Have people lookin out for you.

Just because it says it cost $xxxx doesn't mean YOU have to pay that. There is always a (legal) way!
For sure and don't forget Reverb. com as well . Which has tons of Gibson's for sale daily as I am always looking to see what's floating around out there .

Here's a new stock Explorer (and Flying V backup) being properly roughed up by a hot new band.

I've been seeing a lot of PRS Paul Reed Smith guitars on tour lately (Santana most notably), saw some Strats and Les Paul's (switch back and forth) at this summer's Chicago concert, and a ton of of Les Paul's at Kenny Chesney - as well as the 3 warm-up bands that tour with him. So, I'd say it's a little more mixed.

There's been a lot of PRS out there for a long time. There was a stretch in the late 90's - early 2000's that every guitar magazine's cover shot was holding a PRS.

Disagree strongly . There has to be a "tell" between one model instrument and the next .
I have to disagree with that, there's no difference in the headstock shape between Fender and Squire. Now maybe it's more important for Gibson and Epiphone to have different headstock shapes because of histories of the brands.

Yes, Epiphone needs it's heritage maintained, at least on their models.

Maybe they need to change the 'Inspired By Gibson' to an open book with an 'Inspired' branded logo, or reintroduce 'Orville' for overseas copies.

Honestly I think that's a great idea to use the Gibson headstock on the inspired by models. Epiphone Explorers and Flying Vs don't have a different headstock. It's not like Fender uses different headstocks for Squires. I realize that the companies have different histories. I think using the Epiphone headstock only for the models like the Casino would make them that much more special.

They can use the same font, just don't call it Gibson. 'Orville', 'Maestro', 'Generation', even 'Inspire' all have pluses and minuses. Just make them good guitars.

I think you hit the nail right on the head . 2 iconic brands with significant history . Versus Fender and Squire which was created by Fender . Very good point !
