• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Well I've been wanting to do this for a while, haven't bought any new humbuckers in a couple yrs. Money in hand, just sent Wolfe a very detailed email about what I'm looking for. Description of neck and bridge tones I'm looking for, clips, even the weight of my LP and pot values.

I'm really hoping these will be the last set of buckers I put in this guitar. And if they ain't quite 100%, Wolfe says he will tweak them/rewind until we get it right. They will be replacing a set of Sheptone Tribute PAF's which replaced a set of WCR CR/DB. All no covers, I like the raw open tone and bite of uncovered buckers.

Nothing special except they look pretty, because all of mine have uncovered coils:

I think they are the best pickups out there-

Sweet, love the double creams. Did you have to order covers with those?

So standard Legend specs, A2's ~7.5k neck, 8.5k bridge?

I put a pair in my CR8 and the guitar went from almost being sold to being my main guitar for the past three years. The Legends just brought the life out of that guitar.

No squealing from any of my guitars! I don't use high gain settings very much, but even when I've had them cranked they're fine.

Don't know if you guys saw my post in the "other" Wolfetone thread, but I talked to Wolfe and gave him all the detials of what I was looking for and he recommended the Marshallhead with A2. This is this only Wolfetone pickups I've tried in the past and ended up not liking it (although it was in a different guitar). But hey, he'll "wind 'em till you like 'em".

Quick update. I got the MH w/A2 bridge in...~9.26k, uncovered and it absolutely rocks. Killed the Sheptone I had in there. I also tried a SD Antiquity bridge, stock, covered, ~8.85k and it was good but a little on the bright/thin side and too smooth.

Still, the MH @ 9.26k is a tad hot for me I think. I scored a good deal on a used reverse zebra Legends set @ 8.56k/7.76k and those should be in today. Can't wait to try the Legends, they have been on my want list for a looong time!!

Why did you buy another set. Wolfe will rewind the set you have until you are happy. You could just send it back to him. That is what I did when I discovered the Marshall Heads were too warm and hot. I went with Legends and love them.

Make sure you have good pots, 50's wiring and good caps. This is also a big part of the tone equation. Also clip off the long pickups leads, they add extra capacitance.

Because I like the MH/A2 good enough that if I sent it back for a rewind I would have nothing to compare to...and "what if", in the end, I like the MH better? I emailed Wolfe, again, about purchasing a Legend bridge but he talked about tweaking the MH wind to be more "Legend like". I happened across this set of Legends for a killer price so I jumped on them. I can always sell and get my money back - no way I'm losing any money on a used set of Wolfetones at this price. This is the best scenario for comparison I think.

If I had not liked the MH as much as I do, I would have had no problem sending it back for a rewind. I just want to get this right and get on with life.

This isn't my first LP, I've been playing for 24 yrs now and have done quite a bit of tech work. Rest assured it's got good electronics, all the way down to specific pot/cap values. Leads always get cut to length, but after I'm sure about a pickup.

Thanks for the advice!

I also started with an A2 set of the Marshallheads, and they were too hot for me. Wolfe replaced them with the set of Legends I have in my CR8 and I have been totally satisfied ever since.
