• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Wow--Richard Thompson tearing it up on an ES-175!!!

Richard Thompson is unquestionably one of the best guitar players I've ever seen. He is fantastic solo with just an acoustic and mind-blowing playing electric with his band.

I saw him solo 10 years or so back - not only was he an amazing player, with a completely individual style, he's very funny as well. And he changes tunings on a guitar faster than anyone I've ever seen!

One of the coolest things RT has done lately is cover Britney Spears "Whoops I did it Again" (you're thinking "Huh? - WTF?) He's not afraid to be really different and show that it's really a cool song.

He's also the fastest I've ever seen to change out a broken string ... and telling jokes while he does it.

Oops, I Did It Again

Some more acoustic mastery:

I Feel So Good

Here's some recent electric work for you all to check out as well:

I'll Never Give It Up

Tear Stained Letter

I think technically the guy is a great guitar player, but frankly I can't abide his music. I had about 5 RT albums on my IPod and the last time I sync'ed, I 86'ed Thompson right out of there.

RT's music is a fairly (last 10 years) discovery for me, although I remember reading about him back in the 80's. I thought it would be interesting to post this vid here because even though he is most associated with Strats, he actually started with the ES-175 with FC, before switching to a P90 Goldtop and eventually a Strat.

i dig RT, fotheringay, and FC-the last being one of the more interesting groups to follow thru thier personnel changes

and RT is one of the best most thoughtful songwriters i can think of-with a sense of humor too

his past 2-3 albums have been great

he is an acquired taste for some-

Great stuff!

I actually am good friends with Iain Matthews, and have toured and recorded with him quite a bit. They'll all so YOUNG and serious in that vid....it's a trip.

I agree with all of the above about RT: I've seen him probably a dozen times in every configuration, and as a solo artist, he puts more music out there than just about anybody. Great recent duet concerts with bassist Danny Thompson (no relation) originally from Pentangle.
RT's been around for 40 years now, he's written at least 250 songs. Many are great, some are good, few are bad. His stuff is INTENSE, he doesn't do "light".
Back in the Fairport days he used Gibsons (mostly the LP). Then he switched to his trusty '65 strat which he used for 20+ years, now his custom stuff.
I personally love his ballads best.

He takes bittersweet (not always with the sweet) to a whole new level...
