• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi. I'm planning to build a mojotone tweed champ (5F1) amplifier and wonder if you guys could give suggestions on which speaker to install. I mainly play humbuckers. No single coils in the house. I'm considering Weber CVA8 or Weber 8A125.

I went through several speakers with mine and found the Weber CVA8 to just what I wanted. It's "woody" without sounding dull. I don't play a Les Paul often, though. I'm playing blues and classic rock with a Tele, Strat, H-535...

The ceramic speakers that I've tried in it had a slightly brighter, more modern, less woody, tighter sound that was better for cranking up the amp for harder rock.

I built a Mojotone Champ and to tell the truth, my Humbuckers guitars sound way too dark thru it, My Fenders sound a lot better. YMMV..

Mine did too. I installed the tone control from a 5F2-A- it has a bright cap that's variable. I later took that out and replaced it with a fixed version set where I liked it.

Do you think a brighter speaker like the Weber 8A125T would be a better option to remediate that?

Humbuckers always sound too thick through a 5F1 to me.

Overdriven Gibson sounds good through a Champ but I’m always afraid I’m going to blow it up. I should probably built a kit version. But I usually run a humbucker guitar through a Marshall.

The Weber speaker all the way for the original style 5F1 sound.

Really, the 5F1 sounds best to me if I’m playing a Fender guitar.

I use a Jensen C8R, which gives a brite and crunchy sound - good with humbuckers and single coils. Some folks recommend the WGS 8 inch speaker.

Fat Jimmy's eight inch speaker. I went through a ton of speakers before this. Nicely balanced and breaks up in a nice way.

The best I have heard was a vintage P8RS I ran across and had reconed...big AlNiCo magnet compared to the P8R from the 1950s. Big sound...tighter low end.

My MOJO Champ kit came with a Celestion 8-15 watt
I was hoping for a better sound for my Gibsons so I went to a Warehouse G8C. It still seems too clean for a Champ, maybe just need some break-in...

You have to use the knobs on your guitar

I built my 5F1 as what I call a Champeluxe. The cabinet is a 5E3 size with a Celestion G12H Anniversary 12". I modded it to bias v1a like a Marshall (~ 820 ohms to ground), which increased gain and gave it some extra bite. It works well with my humbucker guitars. But you're asking about 8" - I can't speak to that.

All I can add is that maybe the best sounding vintage teeed champ I ever played/heard was at a guitar show several years back. Had a Weber Signature speaker in it. Real good deal too, wish I’d bought it!

I recently placed an Eminence 820H in a 1964 Bf Champ. I had more low and lower mids and more volume that the stock speaker. It was closer to what that P8RS I once used in a 5F1….bigger..more meat to the sound.

I like Weber and Eminence speakers in my Fender amps. Both companies do some great replacement speakers.
