• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Confusing trend I’ve begun to notice

Like many of you (or not many), I watch many youtube guitarist for lessons, reviews, interviews, etc.
I’ve begun to notice something. At first it was a youtuber doing a demonstration and I noticed his trussrod cover was missing. I didnt think much of it. I then noticed on another youtubers lesson. I then began to notice this missing trussrod cover on more guitars. This morning I went to one of my favorite Grateful Dead teachers youtube channel (Gabriel Bergman) and lo and behold his trussrod cover was taken off also.
Am I missing something? Is this a trend? I’ve noticed this on at least 5 guitarists Les Pauls. Is it just coincidence?
I must admit it looks kind of cool with the exposed cavity and the brass nut.

I don't know why that would be confusing. It is either on or off. No matter what the reason for leaving it off (lazy, frequent TR adj., lost it, etc) what difference does it make? To you or anyone else?

That is an interesting observation, I'll keep an eye out for it!

There are many fads that youtube guitarists seem to take on/create. They are all annoying. Tom Bukovac is one of the ones that does not, he does his own thing, and it's good.

I have seen it with really good professional touring guitarists like Tommy Emmanuel but not in the videos. Most of mine stay on all the time. I've got one electric guitar that I leave the trussrod cover off of. It is a Carvin TL20T that has a really slim neck that I call a "hypercritical" neck. I leave the guitar at the studio. Every time I pull it out of the case the action seems to have moved so I've taken to leaving the cover off to save time tweaking. But that's about it. They rest of my guitars are really stable.

It’s a fad. And a lot fall into it. Clip-on-headstock-tuner level new thing craze. Locking tuners on a wrap tail. Coily cord into wireless on pedalboard stuff.
Running no pickup rings is probably up next.

I started my own fad by taking off just the bottom screw on the truss rod cover so that I could swing open the cover like a sliding door and close it again.

Its not a new trend. When the weather and humidity changes in CO during the spring time the covers on my R9 and SG stay off. Same thing in the fall when we dry out. Just a little trussrod tweak is all that is needed. Covers missing looks like ass, but it is more convenient and less chance of stripping out screw holes. Maple neck guitars seem to stay put, mahogany not so much.

The truss rod cover off is a coded message to anyone that views the video to then consider the dark arts, which thus enables them to progress further with their guitar playing.. much like Jimmy Page and Robert Johnson “going down to the crossroads” to battle with the devil.. the truss rod cover off is an invitation for the dark lord to consider you as a contender. Which should be approached with due care as this is something not to be messed with or taken lightly if you wish to consider this path with your guitar playing, as there is a price to pay in the end.
Also please consider that - This maybe all entirely made up and only written to pass the time while on the can.

Bonjour.

In the mid-1970s, it was considered an invitation to discover the mystical teachings of the Indian guru Meher Baba. "Nothing is everything" strongly implies that no truss rod cover is everything:

Never noticed, I rarely watch those.
What I have noticed, is the majority of these tutorials actually don't play the songs or parts correctly. Really hit n miss.
I even saw one that said :"this is my first time figuring out a song and posting it so be gentle" or such. Why on Earth would you post your first attempt at transposing a song as if it was correct, knowing full well it likely isn't?
So many of these posters don't even watch a video of original artist playing the song, that would help you find what position it is played in!
Drives me nuts.,

I agree.. it’s also very annoying that they start with an explanation of what they are gonna do.. but go off on another tangent for 5 mins.. and you’re left waiting until they’ve figured out what they’re actually doing.. pfft.

Wonder what the pending “Uncle Larry” subscription lesson thing will be like.. 🤔
