• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Confusing trend I’ve begun to notice

New YouTube trend is:

Making new scratches on vintage burst holly veneer during a string change whilst making content for YouTube.

I watch their videos because I love their detailed videography and lighting... but this one caught a huge oopsie!

I think they received a lot of comments on YT and elsewhere about it.

I've seen better set-up content from amateurs, at least the explanation given on what was shown of her execution. Also, I've never changed strings that way... hmm. More like Bukovac.

Sadly, a lot of cringeworthy hater talk was thrown on that tech, Liz. I suspect she's better when just working alone and was very nervous; the 'script' / execution was not well thought out and mistakes happen under pressure, steps get missed when editing together 'shots', etc.

Who knows how she was recruited into doing this, but I imagine there will be repetutational damage from this, no?

NORCLPIPER,

the experts on this forum sometimes don't want to part with handed down tone secrets, so please forgive them.

thankfully I'm not an expert

Truss Rod Covers are TONE SUCKERS, they dampen and rob all the good hertz the headstock emits

The truss rod nut cavity is the sound hole of the electric guitar.

This is exactly why early Teles and Strats sound so thin. The truss rod is facing backwards and firing back into the pickups out of phase. They fixed that later.

A lot of touring pro players take the cover off so that setting the trussrod to frequently changing climates is easier.
My theory is that many amateurs copy that look because it evokes the idea of a guitar that travels a lot and is used a lot in a professional setting.
It reminds me a bit of not cutting off excess strings at the headstock...

Funnily enough, and it may be a massive coincidence, Tim Pierce mentioned truss rod covers on a video a few weeks ago - stating that he had it off his PRS because he likes to be able to tweak it quickly when needed. Another fairly well know YouTuber I watch said similar - especially for a few of his guitars that tend to move a lot and need constant adjustment. I'm not following the trend, I'll take aesthetics over speed of adjustment.

We’ve all done it to varying degrees, she just got caught on camera.

Remember how folks were oiling their fretboards every other couple of string changes?
There are plenty of used guitars on the market that just need the action set and have the truss rod turned correctly. A guitar that needs constant daily neck adjustments
is simply a unstable guitar.
