Pics of that guitar, along with two Customs: a two pickup humbucker Custom and a '54/'55ish one with the single coils, along with the blond amp were in the Memphis CL on, wait for it...

April 1st. Only on the list for a minute and then they went away. I guess someone was having some fun? Here's the ad copy:

"My dad passed away recently and he had three electric guitars and one guitar amplifier that my mom and I are trying to sell. We don't know much about them; the guitars have "Gibson" and the amp has "Fender" written on it, and they're pretty old. Mom remembers that he got the yellow one new in 1959 (she calls it "the pretty one") and the other two he got in the late 60's / early 70's but doesn't remember exactly when. The amplifier he got used in 1959 when he bought the guitar.

My mom needs money to pay my dad's medical bills (he had cancer) and didn't have insurance so we need to sell these kinda fast because the hospital is calling every day. I don't know a whole lot about these except they do work and were well taken care of by my dad. Make an offer and if the ad is gone, it is sold.

I just took the one picture with my cell phone. Email and I can send more photos."

Are there any other burst tops that come to mind that have this look?

It's clearly not a burst: the inlays, the top curve between the pickups, shape of the horn, etc. ...

Not trying to be a know it all but from just the top looks alone it doesnt look like most burst or burst photos I've seen. That being said the last time I saw a top like that being passed as a real burst was that weirdo Godzilla or whatever his name on ebay that said he selling the burst to fund his brothers operation ? but...I'm not saying that a burst couldnt exist with this type flame but just not your norm. its a little too straight for me.

Given that the serial number is known, wouldn't one of the checks be to look at the Gibson shipping log? Or is it not available?

Now all we need is a full photo [or two ... or more!] of this beauty!!
Plus details, if anyone knows this one?

:salude

the pictures are from british guitar & bass march 2007 (vol 18 no 2), and as allready pointed out, from phil brodies collection. In the mag he` s telling :
"... and it turns out it was originally a UK guitar, sold by Macari`s in London in 1961 for 90 guineas to a guitarist who lived in Hull, and traded in for a strat. It then disappeared, and resurfaced in the States in the 80`s."

That pic was also in a magazine that I glanced at (but didn't buy) in a newsagent, called something like 'The Gibson Guitar'. It had a couple of pages on various models, then a feature on two collections, one of which was Phil Brodie's. Unless I am mistaken, I seem to recall his saying he bought this guitar in Texas.

..........with "that" top, the only chance this guitar has of being a real Burst is if the armored knight in the photo contact's a wizard friend of his to cast a spell on the guitar to turn it into one-

I am just starting to learn about the mighty, mighty, Burst. So, could someone please explain why there is no chance of this being a real one? TW did post a serial number. Am I missing something?

The top rules it out to my eyes, I didn't look much further. Like I said, i'm no expert and that may be proven if it's real. Someone else can probably explain about types of maple used and the way they are cut. All I know is that it looks very wrong (and ugly :couch) and nothing like a 50's burst to my eye.

Please explain. :)

re: my own comments, all i'm basically saying is the top wood on that guitar does not, to my eye, have teh visual characteristic's i would ordinarily associate w/ a Burst..... in terms of figure, and also in terms of the matching of the 2 halves-
also- the color does not look right to me..
who know's-maybe the rest of the guitar attached to that top is a Burst, but that ain't no Burst top from where "i" sit--

Tom, come on.. you cant seriously be 'surprised' that this top would meet with this kind of reaction, can you?? not sure how YOU - of all people - ie., after seeing and owning so many actual Bursts - would not immediately find the visual appearance of this top to be a huge 'red flag' :hmm

Like I said, this thread would surely prove that I'm no expert if it's real. It looks like the wood they use on PRS and Historics. The only way I can explain is the same way other reissue stuff.... grillcloths, tolex, nickel plating, finishes, etc., can look different from what i'm used to seeing. I've learned vintage like a monkey would by seeing the same thing over and over again until I finally recognize. Not much technical as far as my personal understanding of old guitars. In this case, i've seen a lot of older Gibson wood and i've seen a lot of modern Gibson, PRS, etc., wood. This doesn't look like what I'm used to seeing older ones but there are always exceptions. It's the first real burst I recall seeing that i would have made my own personal judgement as newer wood. . Maybe in person it would look like old wood, could be the photos.

This is only "my opinion" but to me it screams Lentz Conversion.... Btw, I'd love to own one!
