• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Blackface Fenders are pretty much the ONLY amp I've been putting my 57' GT through lately. :)
My 18watter gets NO love anymore...lol
Even though that clip was recorded just with a video mic, it captures the essence of that early PAF tone IMHO. I was amazed how similar sounding that 58' GT is to my late 57'.

Uh huh. .. You just brought up another point, too; The early PAF tone. I haven't heard, nor thought to seek out, enough recordings/clips to where my ears could pick up on that detail. .. Looks like I have some homework to do! :hee Thanks, brother! :salude

Here's a few good examples of "early" paf tone:

Here's a great one, where they play a 57' GT and a 1960 through the same amps.

"Oscar" is an early '58 GT, and we don't know how early. :ganz .. The "First Burst" does have that similarity, though. More of a "bark", and a LOT of headroom.
Yes,
Early PAF's in general, are brighter IMO... More "air" around the notes, glassy "twang" especially in the middle position. Most times lower output too.

That GT is amazing! The transparency and purity of the notes is fantastic. Kinda reminds me of the Dickey Betts Fillmore tone, albeit in a more overdriven mode. THAT is the sound I hunger for.

I was in Portland in February last year, and went to visit Doug and Pat. Pat brought Oscar with him, though he left Jane, his burst home. Oscar in an amazing guitar, both in sound and looks. Nice weight at about 8 !/2 lbs. I didn't get the serial number.

Me with Doug and Pat. I filmed an interview with them, but have never shown it.

Goldtops are the best looking guitars in the world IMO.

It's weird, if someone told me, when I started playing the guitar at ten years old, that GOLDEN guitars would become my favorites, I would have never believed it :laugh2:

Haha, right you are! It would not go together well with the gold paint...

BTW, I've often wondered why they put black plastics on the early PAF versions :hmm

I assume they had all the necessary black plastic before they ordered the white trim rings and went to the white all around.

I guess that Ted and co followed the car industry with the metal being chromed..........a wise decision.
There was gold on the hardware of the Customs, Explorers, Flying Vs...... but were any tuners gold:hmm

Price dropped to 67k, am I missing something here? Looks gorgeous, seems to sound great too.

Start an LPF GoFundMe? I can possibly contribute 1/67th of the total, that'd give me five days a year of pluckin'!

An yes, once in a blue moon I put things on my "watch list" I'll never purchase :wah but I don't kick tires so don't flame me, been watching this one for some time. I guess I don't follow the market enough cause it seems like a sweet buy from a distance, but I guess there's issues I'm not aware of?

Pickup rings aren't original.
Back of neck refinished.
All the tuners aren't the same.
Tips are wrong.
