• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

So I have a 2021 Gibson les paul Slash victoria goldtop.

They obviously have the gibson "slashbuckers" alnico 2 pickups. I find them a bit too nasal in tone and the neck is a bit muddy, I always find myself having to roll the volume back to clean up the neck pickup.

So I'm looking at replacing them with a more P.A.F style replica like my R8 which sounds incredible. (Gibson custombuckers alnico 3)

Gibson custombuckers are around 500euro for a set. But seymour duncan Seth Lovers are only 350 euros a set.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth a shot or hold out and get the custombuckers.?

Any thoughts?

I put a pair into a home build ES335. Great pickups, clarity/string separation is excellent. They squeal a but at high gain gig levels but that's to be expected from non-potted PUs.
If the pickups in my LP were cr*p I wouldn't hesitate in slotting them in

I bought one for the neck position to combine with an Antiquity bridge as well as Wolfetone, and the Seth was REALLY loud. Even with a full-strength magnet in the Antiquity bridge, the output of the Seth for some reason was overwhelming in the neck, and yes it was a neck model that measured only like 7.5K as opposed to the low 8's in the bridge pickups. Sounded like it would make a great jazz pickup but for whatever reason too much in my Les Paul. Didn't really make sense as I was expecting it to be a lower-output PAF type.

Have you tried adjusting the pickups? Lowering them (or at least the neck one) down a bit, ajusting the pole peices and such? It can make a drastic difference.

Oh yeah, did the whole thing and had it so far away by the time I got things 'balanced' that it sounded like there was a blanket over it. Then raised the pole pieces so that the screw heads were completely out of the cover. It was really weird. Maybe it will make a good bridge pickup.

THEY ARE GREAT PAF PICKUPS.

Not too loud and certainly not weak or timid. Same as Antiquity sans aging.

Seth Lovers have been my first choice for years if I want to do a swap. Sound great and reasonably priced.

I would swap out the pots if you haven’t done that already. If you’re still not happy, maybe you just don’t like A2 pickups?

Both the SD and Gibson Burstbucker sound great & no wrongdoing.

Pot upgrades are great, when needed. Taper and brightness reasons mostly. The "nasal" issue most likely due to pickups. Some recent Gibsons have good quality pots and caps stock, so check first. Agree on Burstbucker 1 and 2.
