Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
I'm working on a wiki for SGs and right now I'm focusing on MIJ copies. At the moment, I'm a bit stumped by Burny because of the lack of serial numbers and multiple manufacturers. If anyone could help me out, or point me in the direction of somebody with expertise, it would be greatly appreciated!
Hold onto your seat because the history of the Firebrands is a convoluted mess. The Mahogany Firebrand was introduced in January 1980 while the Walnut bodied version was still called The "SG" (as it had been since 1979). By July 1980, these models both became part of the "Firebrand Series" and...
Correct, I was just being vague because I figured the model doesn't matter and people might not know what a Pro is.
Edit: that raises another question though; are those called Harmonica bridges too? Were they made by Schaller?
Oh, that's just a little joke, I made the wikis but they aren't businesses, they don't make money.
Maybe I should have posted this in one of the Les Paul sections...
I've noticed that since 2020, Gibson seems to have changed the format for these models. Does anyone know what it officially is?
Speaking of which, does anybody know why Gibson never followed the supposed format of "YYRRRM" and just always had the 1st digit be zero? Makes it harder to...
I meant "funky" as in unusual and interesting, not in a bad way. 24 frets and the deeper set neck joint have never been done on an SG Custom, and it strangely retained the old switch location despite the switch moving on all SGs after 1980.
Here's an '84 custom order that's more of a typical...
I just realized that above SG has a mirror truss rod cover that I would have assumed to be aftermarket if it wasn't stamped "SG". Do you know if anything left the factory with a mirror TRC?
You know what, that must be it!
Because here's what comes up when I search for "Master Tune":
Which is clearly different and more simple, without fine tuners. But also has a very similar roller bridge part.
The ProTune does look a bit convoluted, although nice that it seems easily...
Damn, looks like you're right. I'd gotten the date 1974 from this website:
http://www.guitarhq.com/kluson.html#
Which typically has reliable info on vintage Gibsons. I guess not in this case. Thanks!
On the gold plated parts, I know they lasted longer because Customs were produced in smaller...
I can't say I am (it's just one I came across on Reverb, and as an SG nerd was intrigued by), but it doesn't look amateur and has enough wear to conceivably be that old. I was always confused on this because when I think Tobacco, I think medium brown and the color Gibson uses just looks black to...
