• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

    Murphy Lab - Binding Bleed?

Binding bleed was common on vintage cherry and cherry sunburst Gibsons.

    Is "neck Rise" noticeable?

My '06 R9 has some pretty soft frets and when I took it into our ace local tech (Bruce Alsop) he mentioned that it had a rising tongue. Rather than remove frets and plane down the 'board he just leveled out the frets. He uses his own version of Erlewine's jig and got the frets perfect. The extra...

How common is that 12th fret hump?

I have a 2022 build R0 that has one of the worst cases of “rising tongue” I’ve ever seen on a Les Paul. It will have to be corrected to make the guitar playable. I have an ‘06 R9 also that has the condition. My local luthier corrected the issue by leveling the frets and removing additional...

    New '22 R0 Observations

Updating this post, the R0 has responded to a good setup splendidly. It took about four small truss rod tweaks but the neck is now stable.

    58 Historic Re. Neck Shape

You'll put up with any neck profile if the guitar renders the tone you're looking for. My '06 R9 has a chunky, "U" shaped profile that feels rather weird if I switch to my '19 R8, which has the same thicknes, but a more rounded profile.

    New '22 R0 Observations

Having owned four vintage Les Pauls over the years I can confirm the original brown/pink cases were flimsy and by the time I got them pretty much resigned to closet use while the guitar went into something modern and robust. Oddly, my '60 Sunburst had a black/yellow case that was a big...

    New '22 R0 Observations

You never want strings resting on the back edge of an ABR-1 or any other style bridge for that matter. I do my own setups, have for years. I consider it essential for a guitar player to know the basics, just like a horn player knows how to adjust trumpet valves, replace saxophone key pads, etc...

    New '22 R0 Observations

Thought I'd toss out some observations about my fresh as a daisy '22 R0. I'll start by saying I'm impressed by the build quality, the thin finish, the weight, the hardware and overall tone. What I'm not impressed by: The new Historic case. It's a bit thicker than the earlier ones, with a...

    Custom Buckers in R9

This got me curious about the Custombuckers in my new R0 so I got out the trusty Fluke DVOM and measured 7.97-8.0k on the neck pickup and 7.95 on the bridge pickup. Seems my '19 R8 was a bit better balanced, I'll check 'em again.

Buyers market .... did Gibson overproduce ?

I never look at guitars as an investment. If I want it and have the funds I buy it. Since 1961 I've owned exactly 80 guitars. I keep a little spreadsheet that shows what I paid for them, what I got for them on either resale or trade and the current value of the ones I have on hand. The grand...

    Gibson Les Paul Murphy Lab

I was tempted to go with a ML R0 but decided a VOS was close enough. No regrest, the guitar is awesome.

    VOS NH?

Thank you! Yes, Iced Tea Burst. It's the newest Gibson I've ever purchased, March '22 build date. You can still smell the lacquer drying. It will be intersting to watch how it ages.

    VOS NH?

I wouldn't call thos one a gloss by any means. It's a mixed bag compared to my '06 R9 VOS and '19 R8 VOS. It has a thinner finish than either of the other two, much less VOS effect on the finish than the '06 (the compound came off on the neck for years afterwards), about the same as the '19. I...
