Thanks. Do you know when it started? I have an '05 R4 and an '06 Historic Special.

1990s; on the historics from the beginning.

I think this truss rod condom tone sucking myth is blown way out of proportion. It is a very thin plastic sheath to prevent the glue fastening the fretboard to the neck from compromising the truss rod's function. People here talk about it as if the truss rod is inside a garden hose.

Gibson has since reverted to the historically accurate condomless truss rod, but I don't believe for a minute it has a significant impact on sound. YMMV. Haters, flame away...

I'm in complete agreement. I own R9's from 99, 00 with and a pair from 13 without. A non issue, imo.

I would agree as well and my comparison is from my Norlin era Les Paul Custom (9lbs ) and you should feel how resonant this instrument is as well as my 2014 R9 is . Sometimes it's all in the wood ! My Les Paul Custom I would put it up against any Les Paul for a tone test comparison or whatever except for the holy grail period of 58-60 .

I'm pretty sure it was dissed originally because it was an 'additional part' that was not on the 'Golden Years' Gibsons.

That 'Forum Morphed' into 'it has to be a tone sucker because it ain't on the originals'.

Will it become 'the beginning of the end of Gibson'?

Or 'the end of the world as we know it'?

I don't 'think' so.

But now my head hurts from 'air quoting' and my 'pointy fingers' are tired...

They were started in 1968 to avoid the glue from the Fillet strip rendering the trussrod in-operable. They use to coat the rods with Beeswax but stopped in order to save production time..
