And a refret, which is actually a good idea with 1950s Customs in my opinion.

Why not just source a pickguard though? (Hand cutting was well spotted -- I didn't think to look at it.)
Original 2 humbucker LPC black guard? Good luck with that.
Maybe a guard from the 1968 - 1972 period could substitute, If they are available & not too different. IDK.
Edit: An original 3 HB guard would perhaps be "right" ? Did Gibson make 2 HB guards for those very rare models or did they just use the 3 pickup version?
@matkoehler ? ✌️:)

In my limited experience, some of those black pickguards also curve drastically, and one of those would "feel" right while a flatter one might not.

But they don't all do that.

Anyway I wasn't referring to finding an original two-humbucker Custom pickguard which, you're right, you'd never find. But a replacement would be "spottable"?

The 68-69 guards are the same rolled celluloid but have a different bevel (I don't know if they're the same material after 69). I have one on my PAF converted 56 Custom.

Gibson would have made guards specifically for the two-pickup custom, like they did for the early black plastic GT's

So, are we done? Two pickup ALNICO/P90 that was converted to full-size humbuckers, possibly during a headstock repair?

Refinish, so no serial number. Wafflebacks replaced. Refret. Good-quality work, some of it possibly even done by Gibson except for the hand-modded pickguard which, as a result, could be the original?

Was there any mention of a case?

I think that's it in a nut shell. Case closed for now. Thanks to one and all! Mic drop.
