I recently picked up this Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul and was hoping to learn a bit more about it. As noted in the certificate it is from a limited run made for Ronn David @ Vintage World in 2001 and is the one that is pictured in Robb Lawerence’s book, page 240. I understand that Ronn David had a licensing agreement with Gibson when this was produced. The pickups have been changed, but the originals are in the case pocket with all the candy. Any idea how many of these were produced or anything about? I contacted Gibson but they could not tell me much of anything. I was hoping someone on the Forum knew more about it. Thanks in advance.

IIRC: when this was discussed years ago here on LPF someone mentioned ~30 total.

What pickups are in there now, BTW?

Congrats and enjoy.

Thanks for the replies. It's a great player. It has Wagner Fillmore pickups in it now, which I am not crazy about. Too dirty for my taste. I'm having my friend Rick Norman (formally known as Dr Vintage) replace them with a set of his pickups, still going leave them double whites, as I love the look of that compared to the cherry top. I thought that the fingerboard was rosewood.

According to the picture on post #5, it could be Brazilian rosewood. A decent luthier should be able to confirm (or infirm).

This looks very familiar, a 2000 R9 that you bought from Australia? If so, I had this guitar in my possession for a while and its an absolutely beautiful guitar.
RB, yes, I bought it from Australia many years ago. You may have sold it to me. (can't remember). It's one of my all time favorites.

I wanted to thank everyone that posted on this guitar, especially Top Gun that pointed out the guitar is actually a 2000 issue, regardless of the cert, along with a few other details about it and its history. As I stated earlier, while I did love the look of the double cream pickups against the cherry top, I didn't care for the sound of them. I ended up putting the original pickups back in it and it now sounds as good as it looks. I love the guitar. First humbucking Les Paul I've ever owned. I'm mostly a single coil guy, but this guitar has swayed me over.

Great thread, great guitar(s). Glad you love it. As much as I genuinely love a Strat, Les Paul tone is unbeatable.
