• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

A question regarding one of the LEs Pauls on the welcome page of this site

There is a flame top on the home page of this site with a jazz looking tail piece. VERY Cool looking guitar.

Does anyone know off hand what model Historic paul that would be?

Thanks,

Lance

That thing looks great! That's the guitar that I was talking about.
What sort of tailpiece is that? I would love to outfit a paul with one of those as the look is so extra groovy!

I wonder if gibson would do one with the tailpiece as part of their botb series?

Lance, that tailpiece was fitted on a number of different Hofner Archtops in the late 50's early 60's. I believe there are a couple of different versions of it with different numbers of cross bars.

The tailpiece that was on it when Tom got it is also a Hofner tailpiece similar to the one on this 1959 Club 60

Thanks for the info. Those all look very nice. Is the string tension the same as a bar stop or does it feel different?

Yup, here's my early 60's Hofner with a similar tailpiece:

The string tension was less. But I never noticed it as a problem.
The man I got it from said that tailpiece [the one with the perpendicular/straight crossbars] was on there since the early 60's. There was no Bigsby "shadow" at all, just that left by the base of the Hofner tailpiece.
A close examination of some of these pics, will show that the fade, especially around the knobs, is angled, as if it got an angled source of light, that faded away the red. I have never seen that before, or since.
Thanks for linking the thread, Lily. :dude

BTW: Those tailpieces were also used on several American guitars, including many Harmony hollowbodies.
