Could there be any rational reason that a early 60s SG not have a serial number other than a reneck or headstock repair? I examined the neck and it looks period correct. No gross evidence for a repair.

Awaiting pics. Will post ASAP. In the meantime was just wondering how many have seen any solid body Gibsons leave the factory without a number.

I've personally never seen any SG from this era without a serial from factory. OMMV.

Back in the day there was a story that "employee guitars" had no serial numbers. Never knew if this was true or not, but I have seen several 1950s Gibsons without serial numbers and no obvious evidence of tampering.

The employee theory is what I was told today but I'm not convinced.

That colouring is very dark on the h/s - a repair (in spite of what you're being told)?

Nice looker though!

Headstock repair sprayed with dark paint to hide it. There's the reason.

Heel also looks dark.

Agreed. It looks like both the headstock and the heel have had some work done.

Depending on price it could still be worthwhile. That heel potentially indicates some wood has been removed.
