So... the Tailban are still in power over there? What's up w/that?
No, wait- they're gone, & a more benevolent stripe of Islam is running the place. Right?

This is all such stupidity. It's the modern world clashing with the forever primitive. Too bad these people couldn't get their heads out of the sand and get with it.

So it's OK to grow poppies and make 98% of the world's supply of heroin source under Islam, but Jesus can't just be alright if you want to raise your family in Kabul? Shit, give 'em back the Taliban and Saddam.

In Afghanistan today everything is not perfectly rosy... but girls ARE in school, women can go to a doctor, women (and men for that matter) can vote on their destinies. All forbidden before. Also, Al Queda is hiding like rats in caves rather than parading in the streets, and the soccer stadiums are used for soccer rather than mass executions.
We may not get a Western democracy here, but it's better and safer for Afghanis and America now than a few years ago.
You're not keeping up on the news. The Taliban is reportedly making a comeback. A quarter of the schools in Kandahar province have closed in the past nine months, including all 43 schools in one rural district, after a teacher was shot to death in front of his pupils. Another teacher was beheaded in southern Afghanistan in January. The list goes on and on, and the whole current Taliban situation in Afghanistan (and now Pakistan) is an example of why we should've kept our post 9-11 military and intelligence efforts focused on Al Qaeda and the Taliban rather than take our eye off the ball and create that shitstorm of a war in Iraq.

We've lived with the idea of Freedom of Religion from government persecution all our lives here in the US. That concept is something to new to them. Christians suffered for hundreds of years under the Romans because they rejected the pagan gods. Jews suffered under the Egyptians because they rejected the Egyptian gods. It goes on an on.

It is truly sad that these extremists can justify murdering another human being who simply proclaims that he believes in a religion other than the one they believe in.

What is the solution? I have no idea. It's just beyond me.

It's sad that some people just can't advance, learn, and go forward.

Man, I had a third grade teacher I wish someone would have beheaded. She was a big, fat, mean beeyutch, and I don't mean maybe. It would have been so right to have her head on a plate.

I was taught by a nun like that in parochial school when I was young. One day a friend of mine finally decked her right in the face with his fist. Shocked us all.

Dude,

I didn't say she was Catholic. In fact, I don't think she was.

This is no surprise. At least in that part of the world it is a religion of dominance over others. Men dominate women, tribes dominate other tribes, leaders dominate their countrymen and religion dominates them all. Mess with the system and your dead, literally. The only thing tangible that most of these people have other than a handful of rocks or sand is their honor. That is why father's eagerly kill their daughters if they are caught screwing around. This Christian convert dishonored God and he has to pay the price.

My grandparents were missionaries in Nigeria in the 30's. The area was predominately muslim. An 11 year old orphan boy in the village they lived in befriended them. He became a Christian. My grandparents went back to the United States after a couple of years because of the outbreak of WWII. My grandparents later found out that soon after they left the boy was killed for converting to Christianity.

Makes you think again about what the reality is in that part of the world. Ruthless domination is just how they do business. Reason and tolerance is not part of the plan at all.

Well, kind of:
Charges have been dropped for "lack of evidence". It would be much better if they struck down the law completely, but I guess it's a step in the right direction.

No shit, the fact that the law remains on the books is insane. It'd be interesting to see how many other countries have a similiar law - & what our relationship is with each. As far as I'm concerned, not one iota of trade ought to be conducted with any country with a law like that in effect. No aid or investment either.

Separation of church and state is a wonderful thing indeed. Our founding fathers had it right.
